Has anyone tried to fit a 4x8' sheet of plywood/particle board/drywall/etc into their Prius? Secondly, has anyone been successful? I need to pick up some particle board and would like to know if it'll fit prior to trying. If the 4x8 won't fit, I can go with 4x4s.
Re: 4 x 8? Maybe 4x6 I have a Mexican blanket I spread out in the hatch area with the back seat down, for when I am driving with my dog. I am pretty sure the blanket is 4x6, and it fits nicely. Besides, I am 6'5" and I tried laying in the back, as if to sleep. I almost fit, again suggesting 4x6.
Hmm, so a couple feet shy. A couple inches and I could fudge the front seat. I fully expected someone to suggest that I extend my tape measure eight feet and see if it fit. But I know from experience that sometimes you can measure something and find out later that for one reason or another it doesn't fit. Looks like I'll have to go with the 4x4s. Thanks, Turtle.
I had carried an 8' 1x12. I needed to lower the right section of the back seat and move the passenger seat all the way forward and fully recline it. So a 4x8 won't fit.
So just leave the hatch open and let the board stick out the back. I used that trick many a time in my old Laser hatchback. When you have a hatchback you don't need a minivan!
Just to admit the way my mind works. When I read that the front seats go all the way flat, I thought it was for snoozing. You know, when you're driving a long time and need some rest. For the record that works too. I would suppose that you don't have to sleep. ;-)
i hauled something almost as big. i just used the item to hold the hatch open so it wouldnt bounce. you will never be able to get an 8' anything in there. the hatch is so light that keeping it open isnt a big deal. when i moved, i had the hatch open for 3 of the 5 trips i made. i did have to use a pillow and bungie cords because i was afraid the window might break, but the hatch is light enough that breakage seemed a fairly remote possibity.
ya i ve seen that pic a few times... amazing aint it?? and to think he also had 800 lbs of concrete in the back seat!!

I'm allowed to say this because I was a naval officer.......so the guy was headed to Annapolis...hmmm? I remember when I was in the navy I used to tell folks that I sailed "sail boats" and the reply from the old salts was" the two most useless things in a sailboat was a naval officer and a wheelbarrow"...... how did I get so far off the subject of the poor guy trying to save a few bucks by not renting a U-Haul .... age I guess. Speaking of hauling stuff on a Prius... the first one I ever saw was here in Duncan parked in front of Staples where he had two small kayaks resting on an airfilled roof rack. He said he regularly drove down US 101 to San Francisco and back with that setup and noted minimal reduction in his MPG. Was he fibbing or what? :|

Looks slick, but the measurement picture I found on this site suggests the hatch is < 42 inchs. I'll have to measure max possible width at the rear without considering an item has to fit fully inside.
