I was four years old in 1954. Observations of photoelectric effects began in 1839 with a long history of investigators contributing to our understanding. Albert Einstein got a 1921 Nobel Prize for his work explaining the voltage effects of the photoelectric effect. What Bell Labs did was make efficient solar cells that could generate practical amounts of electricity . . . just in time for satellites.
