    The 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid Reviewed by AIADA

    This third generation hybrid is geared for the mainstream -- eco-friendly, high tech and high performance all in the same package

    I was exhilarated. After driving the high-performance 2005 Accord Hybrid for a couple hours -- punching it over 80 on the straights and taking tight banking curves way over the limit -- I met a friend.

    After telling her I’d been driving a hybrid, she asked: "Yeah, but does it go regular speed?"

    Maybe it’s not a laughing matter to Honda executives. It’s understandable, though.

    Consumer surveys indicate nearly half the population thinks of an extension cord when you mention the word, "hybrid." Perhaps another good percentage thinks of an aerodynamically shaped sci-fi mobile. That you have to get folded into before journeying across the fifth dimension.

    The 2005 Accord Hybrid will dispel those misperceptions. This car not only delivers excellent gas mileage for its class -- 30 mpg in the city, 37 highway, it has more power than a standard Accord and all the appointments of the company’s flagship sedan.

    People wondered last year why I insisted on calling the HSD Prius the "third" generation. It was blatantly obvious to me that the media would call the next hybrid from Honda "third". And sure enough, they are. It doesn't even have upgrades as significant as Toyota did in 2000 & 2003.

    Anywho, did you notice that there was absolutely no mention of SMOG related emissions whatsoever? That's because this hybrid doesn't reduce them. In fact, some traditional vehicles are actually cleaner.

    And yes, I did like the fact that GM's Silverado didn't get a mention.

    Lastly, the tax misinformation is frustrating. It's a deduction, not a credit.

    I read the article. At least he does say Honda's 3rd generation. I suspect it would take more knowledge than the average car buyer has to not conclude it is the latest and greatest, those coming before being 2nd gen regardless of make.

    While replying to the author (that deduction vs credit thing) I researched the car. On the Honda site they have a "fuel savings calculator". So I put in my 49 mpg highway number and got:

    Based on your current vehicle and driving habits, the Accord Hybrid does not present considerable gas savings. However, it does provide the quality and dependability you have come to expect from the Accord family of vehicles.

    Does not present a considerable gas savings? :lol: No, I guess it wouldn't.

    Wish he'd test somewhere else. I live adjacent to the GW parkway and commute it daily, plus errands. The speed limit is 45mph. He's doing 80 mph 'test' runs?

    Hmmmmm. I like the "futuristic look" of my Prius, but if they are comparing this car to one that you have to fold yourself into, I wish they had been more specific and named Honda's other hybrid as the offender.
