The New Trend in car manufacturing appears to be offering technology over quality. The fact that most mid-size cars have similar build quality, the huge discrepancies of yesteryear have largely vanished, has prompted things like the advanced technology package in the Prius.

The question is, will it make a Prius return a higher price percentage when its sold to help offset its $ 5,180 original Upcharge ?

Lane Keep Assist, Dynamic Cruise control, auto-parking feature, self-leveling LED headlamps etc.

At least we can be sure the Prius will never stagnate as Toyota seems to be able to add all these 'Latest & Greatest' high tech option packages to the car for those so inclined.:)

I guess it depends on whether or not these technologies are still working when you sell the car!

Depends... stuff like navigation systems don't add value to the car (would you buy a 5 year old computer? most won't bother with a 5-year old navigation system. Don't believe me? Take a look at a 2005 Toyota with the Gen 4 nav and tell me you're ok with that).

PCS and DRCC may be worthwhile options that people will actually pay for (safety feature + comfort/convenience feature).

I was going to buy a Canadian version of the AT package ( except here in Canada we get sunroof but not 17 inchs.) but i am going for the touring version instead with leather inside.....im gonna get LED light, foglight, 17 inchs wheel and couple extra stuff.

I think for Canada i dont need the sunroof and i love the look of the car with the 17.....plus i dont need auto parking assist and lane keep assist and a good looking but not really nice GPS

To me it wont hold the value of the car really.....

if you look at kbb values for the same car with different options, you will find you get the same percentage back for the options that you do for the car. for instance, a salesman tried to sell me a camry with a sunroof because that was all he had on the lot. he told me the sun roof commands a lot more resale value than without and practically everybody wants a sunroof and is willing to pay for it.
but when i looked up a four year old camry with and without sunroof package, whatever the one without the sunroof package had depreciated, the one with also depreciated by a similar percent.
and with technology changing so fast, i would think that package would depreciate quickly because of what will be available in the new model.

The cars that depreciate the least are the base models... fact.
The more options, and bells and whistles you add... the more your car depreciates as a percentage of total value.
People compare used prices to new... base prices.
Buy the technology package because you love the gadgets... but not for resale value....

Since I expect to have any car for 10 years, resale value never comes into my evaluation. Meanwhile, I get to enjoy all the gizmos in my V with AT for a long time.

Dynamic Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Auto Parking etc. are OPERATIONAL features used to actually Drive the vehicle and in ways to improve the Owners Experience and Comfort. Appearance and comfort feathures like 17" Wheels, and heated power seats do command better car prices than the same car without them because appearance and comfort have always been important. My question is will the New Technology Features improve ones retrun on investment when they sell that car to a degree better than the unequipped cheaper version of the same car.

My thinking exactly ! Evidently you buy a car with a similar purpose in mind to how I see it.:)

Where is the evidence of that ? Try selling a car without Air Conditioning if you can even find one anymore. People DO expect certain comforts and conveniences, and they do pay for those in new cars overwhelmingly. Base models sell poorly when new. I suspect the same is btrue of the used car martket as well.

Air conditioning? No base models come without features for absolutely necessary comforts and conveniences and lots of people can do without many of the gadgets.

In my experience I don't always get money back for the options, but since those kind of desirable options make it easy to sell over a base model I won't loose any sleep over it...At the end of my ownership I want to get rid first and are concerned about every $ or £ later...Another important thing to me is the value of enjoying the 'gadgets' whilst I have the vehicle...

Yes certain things can enhance value (leather, alloys, A/C, cruise etc). Leather is debatable since some people don't want it.

But stuff like IPA and LKA may not. It's not a "necessity" like A/C but more like a toy. Would I buy a used Lexus with DRCC & PCS? absolutely. Would my friends? Not necessarily.

On the flipside, I wouldn't place much value on a navigation system on an older vehicle. i.e. if someone were to sell me a 2004 Prius w/ nav, it would make no difference to me if someone were to sell me a 2004 Prius with the same bells & whistle sans nav.

You're asking about a V vs. a V AT and I'm saying it may not. Then again, while you may lose more as a percentage of the value when new, it may be easier to sell when you can say "for a few grand more, you get a loaded Prius" over a base model.

+1. If I were worried about resale value and bought a base car, trust me, I wouldn't be happy about the ownership as I would if I were to buy a car with the options that *I* want and not what the used car market wants.

if this is how you see it, why did you ask the question?

Most places don't go by the blue book, they use the black book. According to current black book data, II III IV should sell for the same with the exception added for the following

    17-Inch Aluminum Wheels +$200 Leather +$500 Navigation System +$1,000 Power Sunroof +$550 w/o Cruise Control -$450
This all depends on your dealer, Toyota dealers will most likely give you more.
