i have paired my android phone for handsfree on the car. everytime i go in the car and the bluetooth gets paired, music from my phone album automatically plays on the radio. is there a way that the phone function is the only one that automatically connects to the car and not play the music not unless i wanted it too?

Does that happen even if you weren't listening to bluetooth audio the last time you were in the car? For example, if you were listening to a CD or FM radio when you last turned off the car, does it automatically switch the source to bluetooth audio the next time you start the car?

I've never tried using bluetooth audio from my Android phone, but my head unit always starts up on the same source it was playing when the car was last turned off.

I don't know what android phone you have but mine will pair but will not automatically start playing music unless I open up the media player and hit play. This is even in the BT tab.

Turn the radio off or switch it to a different input. When you turn on the radio it will tell the Bluetooth device to start playing (if it was playing the last time you had it on)

I found it annoying at first and started looking for a pause button on the radio or an option to disable the auto play until I finally realized it was exactly like a CD in any other car radio I ever owned and turning the radio on and off is the simplest was to control it. Now I like it a lot. I just hit the power button on the radio when I pull up to a drivethrou and the podcast playing over Bluetooth is paused. Later I hit power again and it resumes the podcast right where it left off. Occasionally I get in the car and I am surprised when something starts to play and I hit power to turn it of.

yes it happens even if i turn off the radio or car on am/fm or ipod. as long as it detects the bluetooth audio, it plays it automatically.

Press and hold on CAR MULTIMEDIA (or whatever you called your pairing), Options

Uncheck Media (Use for media audio)

I have the identical problem, which is extremely annoying. I don't want to hear the music on my phone automatically - but I do want to be able to choose to hear the music when I want to (and have the Bluetooth sync up to the other features of the phone).
Instead, if the car's audio power button is on - even if I'm already listening to AM, FM or SAT - the screen eventually switches to BT and the phone music begins playing. [It's an old Samsung Fascinate 3G phone]
Toyota & Samsung: is my only choice to disconnect the phone from its BT music connection so that it is unavailable for that function?

Just FYI; I have a Sprint HTC Evo 4G and the 2012 Prius III and this does NOT happen to me. It only comes on if that was the last input I listened to.

It may help you to know that your problem does not happen to everyone. Maybe you can delete the pairing of your phone to the car and re-create the pairing. See if it does it then.

My other thought is, do you have any 3rd party music playing app installed on your phone?

Just to add to previous remarks, even if I use the Prius command to disconnect the bluetooth connection to my phone for music (keeping it for phone and internet), the next time I turn on the car it will reconnect that connection automatically. Therefore, the phone will hijack the audio system (if it is powered on) and begin the music from my phone. That remains quite annoying. I can't find a setting on the phone that might affect this (it is an old 3G Samsung Fascinate). Is there anyone who has solved this problem? Can it be accessed somehow through the mobile Entune app? Anything? For what it's worth, I do not have a 3rd party music playing app and I have unpaired and then re-created the pairing -- no luck. Thanks!

It appears to me that the problem is in the 2012 model, not the 2010. On the 2010 Prius, it appears that the music only plays if you previously selected BT on the audio screen. (That is what I see. If I have BT selected, when I turn on the car, and my cell phone is set to bluetooth enabled, the music player automatically starts playing my playlist. If I have SAT selected, the music doesn't play.)

So, it would be most helpful if people would post suggestions only if they have a 2012 Prius and are experiencing (and preferably solved) the problem.

the unpair and pair thing didn't work... and i don't have any 3rd party music playing app either... i'm thinking it's a phone problem coz when i connect my blackberry to the 6.1, it just recognizes the phone and not the music in it...

This was driving me crazy on my 2012 Prius, and once almost caused an accident (I switched to the Bluetooth audio source so I could hear Google Navigate through a complicated interchange and just as it started giving me directions, the Music app started up at loud volume, startling me).

The good news: this motivated me to find a fix. The possibly bad news for some: the solution I found requires root access on your phone.

Assuming you're rooted, install AutoStart Manager (free app, link goes to Google Play). Open the app, and find your Music app (I had to choose "show system apps" on the menu to get Music to show up). Tap the Music app in the list to open up its list of receivers, and uncheck (Music).MediaButtonIntentReceiver. This prevents the Music app from receiving requests from other programs to start playing (probably also prevents them from requesting pause too, but I haven't checked). It does NOT affect your ability to start or pause playing from within the Music app itself.

    Hope this helps others.
