All I'm seeing is recovery to 'normal' sales with the addition of two VW diesels becoming significant players. By no means dominant, they have moved up to the middle tier.

The diesel market has me scratching my head: Jetta, Passat up, and; Golf down. The other diesels are 'in the noise' but my eyes don't see a trend. What is up with the Jetta and Passat that the Golf is missing?

Accord Hybrid heading in right direction. Last I checked the fuelly aggregate for 37 posters was ...

40.9 MPG average. If it hits about 44 or 45 when they get hundreds of posters, I'll say the 47 avg is legit. Prius has never hit 50 on fuelly, but often within 2 or so mpgs from average, like 47 or 48.

The new generation Golf is coming out in a month or two. There may not be many old ones left, or perhaps customers are waiting for the new one.

We've seen the same phenomena in depressed 2009 Prius sales after the 2010 was announced.

There may be a subtle pattern between the Golf, Jetta, and Passat that gives a clue about price, performance, and recent sales:

Sources: EPA metrics and Jeff Cobb's Hybrid Dashboard report

It may be the Golf is on the small end of compact. It also is a hatchback and in a narrower price range compared to the Jetta. In contrast, the Jetta and Passat have more 'overlap' of specs and price.

This suggests Toyota has a hole: a compact, hybrid sedan. The Camry hybrid is a full-size sedan and in the top tier. The Prius c does a good job as a compact hybrid but it is not a sedan. But there is a risk of assuming a VW diesel buyer shares characteristics with a Toyota hybrid driver and I'm not sure that is the case.

Before the 2010 came out, VW diesel advocates loved to 'burn rubber' and 'highway driving' (busted!) The advocates shared an attitude reflected in the "meet the Volkswagen" that complained the Prius did not make a 'manly noise.' In contrast, Prius advocates were strong on MPG and not enough on the vehicle as transportation (*) . . . it is a dang car for Gosh Sakes.

The best thing Toyota could do with the next generation Prius is listen to the 'car guys' and borrow a Lexus designer to give us:
    • comfy seats - we already know Consumer Reports would 'fall in love' with a comfortable seat option
    • comfy cabin - how about some 'retro' cabin controls, bring back the knobs
    • quiet the cabin - the car is already quiet enough for legislation, protect the cabin
    Bob Wilson

    * - It took three months to master 52 MPG in our compact, 2003 Prius. But it was followed by emergency power inverter and a tow bar.

Hatchbacks never sell well. The Golf TDI and Jetta TDI were both similarly priced last year but sales weren't even close.

    I'm seeing:
    • Toyota PiP at 5,037 units sold YTD 2014 vs. 2,922 units sold this time last year.
    I'm guesstimating*:
    • 1,700 PiP's sold outside CA year to date
    • if so that's 3,337 PiPs sold in CA YTD 2014, up from an estimated 1,227 CA PiPs last year (almost triple)
    • If true, this would say 66% of PiP's have sold in CA so far this year (vs. an estimated 42% last year)
    • It suggests total Plug_In sales in CA further increasing towards 50% for 2014 (vs. 44% last year)
    • CA Green HOV sticker shortage and low prices on PiP's in CA are probably "driving" this
    • Interesting to see if trend holds for rest of year, but sounds like CA may approve more green HOV stickers!
    * estimates based on 42% PHEV sold in CA in 2013. I figure last year 42% of PHEV were sold in CA, 46% of BEV were sold in CA, and 44% of PHEV+BEV (total Plug_ins) were sold in CA. So I am assuming 2014 PiP sales rates holding constant outside of CA, and I am also assuming PiP was 42% CA last year. In other words, I don't think we have any data showing how many PiPs have been sold in CA (nor Volts) so I am forced to guess based on overall PHEV sales figures. CNCDA.org recently gave out CA 2011, 2012, and 2013 Year end composite numbers for PHEV and BEV.

Percentages may be skewed a bit as PHEVs are available nationwide, yet the PiP is available, officially, in 15 (?) states.
However, I am not sure if that would raise, or lower the percentage?

...fyi Zythryn one thing we do know is %Tesla's sold in CA 2013 and it seems pretty close to the overall 46% of total BEV's.

Well, I can personally vouch that PiP's are NOT available in AZ. We wanted one, but none in AZ dealerships, only available from/thru California.

    True.
That doesn't have any bearing on the PiP though, does it?

The appeal of the Passat Diesel and the Jetta Diesel IMHO with a POV of the Washington DC Metro Area is that both get good fuel economy, have good payload-cargo capacity, and both come in wagon configuration which makes them a more fuel efficient alternative to the standard SUV people buy.. Diesel cost about 5% to 10% more than regular gas that a hybrid uses, but diesel vehicles have more reserve power and cargo capacity than a hybrid based power plant vehicle like a Prius V or a Lexus CT 200h. Also, while expert hybrid mechnics are rare here there is no shortage of skilled diesel auto mechanics here. However, buying a new new diesel vehicles in the DC area can be a real hassle because VW only sends a limited number of diesels here which guarantees buyers will get gouged by the dealerships. Toyota atleast for now seems to be shipping as many Prii to the DC area as the market will handle and that's has eased up price gouging of hybrids. The Prius liftback can get better real world fuel efficiency than the Jetta TDI or the Passat TDI even if one ignore the fuel cost differences. With respect to pollutant emissions - the Prius model line is designed to be more environmentally friendlier than diesel based vehicles like the VW TDI series.

I'm trying to find more details about the VW promotions:

I'm getting the impression from TDIclub forum postings this is a credit card with a pre-paid, $1,000 balance. You can buy fuel or anything else you want using the card. It is an alternative to dropping the price $1,000. But it is brilliant labeling it a "fuel card."
