It saddens me that we might not be able to buy these in Australia until, at least, Gen IV so please inform me : What allows the PiP to travel 100km/h without ICE as opposed to the standards 70km/h? Is it just software? Secondly, do you still have to Pulse and Glide as much in the PiP if there's the bit of extra torque?

My thoughts... I'm no expert. The larger battery also has a greater kW output capability. However, the speed limit on EV seems to be somewhat arbitrary for the non-plug-in, probably selected for best mpg. The higher speed for the PiP is to make it useful on the highways and its limit may have to do with limiting MG speeds. P&G (or your favorite technique) is still very important when you run out of EV range.

Thanks, I know the available kW is larger but I assumed the standard prius was already receiving the maximum otherwise it would overspin or overheat. Maybe the PiP has different with windings on its MG's?

MG1 is rated 10,000 rpm. It reaches that rev when Prius is at 62 mph with ICE at 0 rpm. This is the same for regular prius and PiP.

That means the final drive gearing (post PSD) must be different.

Actually, the regular Prius will run on the electric motor at highway speeds as well - it just isn't as obvious unless you watch the instant fuel economy gauge. I used to regularly see it happen at 60MPH, on a downgrade.

I believe they are the same. Just that the regular Prius MG1 never reaches 10,000 rpm.
