I am wondering if it is possible to install the homelink and auto dim mirror to the prius III? Ours just has the basic mirror and I have seen the prius IV and V that has the rearview mirror with autodim and homelink. I have also seen the big black plastic piece that covers the wire going up into the headliner. Has anyone attempted to put this in their car?

I just purchased the Gentex GENK41a auto dimming mirror with homelink from Amazon.com for $158.00 with free shipping. I'm going to have a local stereo shop do the installation. Hope to have it done this week, received the mirror today... I'll let you know how it works out.

Look up your dealer. My dealer installed the mirror on my Prius II for $280ish.

As long as you dont have a sunroof, they'll do it.

Why won't they install the auto dim mirror is you have a sunroof? Doesn't the mirror mount to the windshield on all of them?

I did it in around an hour. Test light was handy to find the constant hot lead.

its simple to install....whatever model you have.
one wire for switched power for autodim located near lower left panel (run the wire along the headliner and down the left side.
one wire for ground (in the overhead panel)
one wire for always-on power (in the overhead panel) for the homelink

    Paul,

I am a bit more puzzled about the solar roof/homelink incompatibility issue.

Clearly, Toyota likes to make money on selling accessories like the homelink mirror...so they must have a good reason for not doing it.

At the same time, I have no doubt you have installed this option with no problem, minimal hassel.

Any thoughts as to what Toyota is thinking?

    Thanks

None what so ever! I happen to know a member here (Craigmri) who added the auto dim mirror w/HomeLink to his 2010 Prius III w/Solar. Same connection is his I had in mine. You do have to find one of the power sources from another location behind the dash, can't recall if it was the constant power (for HomeLink) or the switched power for the auto dim feature. Craig pulled his from behind the glove box, mine was tapped from the driver's side. I had mine installed, so I don't know the exact location, but others here should, and it is the same regardless of whether you have Solar or not.

I've never noticed that auto dimming actually works. Headlights always seem ridiculously bright in the mirror--just like old-time mirrors. Is there a trick to getting it to work that I haven't seen in the manual? I wonder if it's possible it wasn't wired properly. Hm.

Mushpuppy: Try adjusting your mirror up or down vertically. Due to the split rear window, the rear spoiler can shade the sensor and cause the mirror to not dim effectively. By moving the mirror up or down to where the headlights directly hit the sensor will improve performance.

I had mine installed before leaving the dealership when I first bought my 2010vIII.

The homelink works fine, the autodimming not so much. This has to do with the fact that the rear spoiler or whatever you want to call it that cuts the rear window covers in most part the headlights from traffic behind. This blocks the mirror's sensor; therefore not dimming as one would like to. Now, given that light is blocked by rear spoiler, I am fairly ok with the end result.
