I'm debating on whether to purchase a PIII or PIV. I'm not very keen on the leather seats (very HOT out here) and I can live without the Plasmacluster, passengerside and trunk Smart Key Entry. Can I order the Auto-Dimming Homelink Rear View Mirror separately? And is it a straight forward install (i.e. I can do it myself) or would it be best for the dealer to install it?

Yup. You can order it from Gentex and install it yourself. I think vfaq.net has installation instructions for the Gen 2 Prius.

Gentex has an How Do I Get One? page explaining their mirrors are standard equipment as option packages on more than 150 vehicles. This list includes the Toyota Prius. However, Gentex makes clear it does not sell directly to individuals. Individuals wanting to retrofit a Gentex auto dimming mirror are directed to contact the Mito Corporation authorized by Gentex to sell its most popular mirrors to individuals. However, the Fit Guide link listing the makes and models for which Mito has mirrors does not list the Prius. I now own a wonderful package #6 2006 Prius with auto-dimming mirror, which I love! I would purchase a 2010 Prius III if I could fit it with an auto-dimming mirror. A local Toyota dealer called Auto Anything today, another seller of Gentex mirrors, asking about an auto-dimming mirror for a 2010 Prius and this dealer was told no Gentex mirror can be bought for a new Prius. Does anyone know of any auto-dimming mirror that could be fitted onto a 2010 Prius III?

Maybe you could order it from the parts department of a Canadian dealer? All packages here, excluding base, come with the auto-dimming mirror. Might be worth a try.

I'm not sure the wiring is any different. You just have to know where to connect the wires on the specific vehicle. The closest is Canada, yes. You can buy one from the dealer (they're offered for the Corolla, Matrix and Yaris as accessories). It's an auto-dimming mirror w/ compass.

Mazda also sells some with outside temp gauge and compass and homelink.

I called the Mito Corporation in Elkhart, IN this morning. Jim told me NAPA sells a "mirror button" that can mount a Gentex auto-dimming mirror on a Prius or any vehicle, if the original mount does not fit the Gentex mirror. From inside, it would not be visible because the mirror would screen it from view. Mito Corporation has a list of authorized installers in many cities. Jim named The Specialist here in Tucson, who can also order the Gentex mirror for $79, as well as install it. Jim was extremely helpful and professional! Today, we put down a deposit on a Prius III, now that we know we don't need to spend the extra $2850 needed for the Prius IV that has the auto-dimming/homelink mirror installed from the Toyota factory. Whoopee!

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Which mirror are you getting? The lowest MSRP on MITO's website was $259 MSRP. Any idea what the installation charge will be? By the way, there's a seller on eBay that carries the Gentex model with Homelink and the compass for around $160 shipped.

It's the Gentex Part # 50-GENK2A. It sells for $79 because it's without Homelink or any other additional feature. I'm content with just the auto-dimming mirror, but I checked the eBay seller you mentioned and his prices are great. MITO'S least expensive Gentex mirrow with Homelink is $249. Thanks to the great PriusChat members, I'm learning a lot of great info. fast!

not to be a luddite but i don't have a problem flipping the manual lever to "night" on my rear view when it becomes "night"

Our dealer will be switching out our Homelink rear view mirror from our 2006 to our 2010 when the The Pearl '10 arrives.

Great! Keep me posted to how it went, and what the cost was! I'd be interested in doing the same.

I've had lots of expensive cars with the auto dimming option and have never liked any of them. What I really want is an auto LED 'flip the bird' icon for my rear window.

Aftermarket is the way to go, you save a lot on the Prius as the jump from III to IV is so huge. They make mirrors that can display the rearview camera now as well.

Yup. That's standard on all Prius except the base model in Canada.

Hi Breezy. Were you actually able to have this done? I purchased the GENK41A Homelink mirror kit specified by MITO and took it to an authorized installer here in Tucson last week. But the slope of the windshield on the 2010 must be steeper than the Generation II. The mirror was still pointed at the car seats when fully extended, so I sent the mirror back to the seller. It appears there's no Homelink mirror yet that can be purchased for the Generation III Prius if it does not come from the factory. I'd be delighted if someone could tell me otherwise.
I was thrilled with the self-dimming mirror on my 2006 Prius.:faint:

I swapped one out this week in mine. Got it here for $25! bought the little wire cover from MGT for $8.50, and no more garage door openers hanging around. Mine came out of a 2009 model from a guy who wanted the compass on his.

BTW, the ground is the black and white wire.
