I never knew what fun to drive meant until we went to California a few weeks back, to Yosemite and Redwoods, we had a lot of winding roads at 50 MPH. Back east they'd immediately slap 25 MPH on those passes. But no cell phone reception and not too many EV's when you get out to the back woods.

Anyways I believe Chesea Sexton has been saying all along need to focus drive quality instead of eco-superiority; the latter is highly dependent on personal beliefs of what is best for the Planet.

Those people you see speeding and weaving in and out of traffic? They aren't late or impatient; they are improving their level of fun.

More than those with environmental concerns. The people dumping BMWs and Porsches for Teslas didn't suddenly have their environmental concerns outstrip their fun of driving in their car every day.

If I had gotten the 2004 Focus I test drove instead of the Matrix, I probably would have skipped on the gen2 Prius for a gen3 or even the gen4.

Yup. Of course, you risk alienating part of your original set of customers but things change and they'll move on (hopefully to another of your products but usually to a competitor)

lol. Well, they are offering the Two Eco with the hypermilers in mind :)

We've seen examples at PriusChat time and time again.

I don't see why adding other aspects to a car would alienate current owners.
Unless you lost what attracted them in the first place?

I suppose if a customer thinks any additional attribute detracts from the "purity of the message".
I doubt there are many (if any) people that are so anti-performance/handling/quite that they would leave the most efficient hybrid on the streets just because they improved handling, performance, drive quality, etc.

you do lose other aspects, it's all about compromise. no car is perfect.

you can market a car as 'fun to drive, quiet and responsive', but if it isn't, it won't take long for people to find out. also, not everyone wants quiet.

So we sell them the cars with a buzz in the dash or engine mount without the rubber insert?

    Playing card in the spokes!

We can give them an 8-track deck and tape of engine noises.

I love the rumble of a V8 or the wind from a convertible; but can do without the whine of tires on pavement.

that creepy Harley rider with the straight pipes across our street from us - he likes to rev during my nap ... so yea, he likes noise. Maybe I should make a 200 decibel copy for him ... & play it back for HIM when i leave the house at 4am since he likes noise so much. Give him a double dose & see how that goes.

Loosing some aspects is different though.
I agree if you loose some aspects, you may loose some customers.

However, I don't think anyone that likes the rumble of a V-8 is going to give up on a Prius because it got even quieter:p

And failing to live up to statements may also loose a company customers. Once again though, that is not because they added aspects to the car, it is because the failed to add what they said they were going to add.
