I recently purchased a 2006 prius, which is apparently the base model. It does not have satellite radio, GPS, or CD changer. I checked for the "hidden" AUX input I was told was in all 2006 models, but it is not there. There's an AUX power recepticle, but no audio jack.

With the complexity of the prius (which I'm very new to), I am hessitant to just buy what I've done for so many other cars I've owned and expect it to work. I'm hoping somone else here has some input for me.

Two products I've found say they are compatible for the 2006 prius, but say that there needs to be a SAT button. I have only the PWR button where the CD slot is, then the Vol and Tune knobs with Seek/track, AM, FM, Disc, and Scan buttons between. Does anyone have the experience to know if this still work, and be able to be controlled by the VOL buttons on the steering wheel?

Products are "PIE TOY03-AUX/s Toyota Aux Adapter" and "Grom A-TOY-N Toyota Lexus Aux RCA Adapter" (won't let me post links yet)

Also, I've noticed that the Vol and Tune knobs can be detracted into the dash so that they are flush with the surface. Usually, this would be to power on/off the radio, but pushing them in and out seems to have no effect on anything. What's the deal with this?

    Thanks for helping!

    Hi Ron,

I can't offer advice about installing an auxiliary audio jack or anything else that will accomplish the same thing, but FYI an auxiliary audio jack was not standard on the 2006 Prius. In fact, it was not standard on any model year of the Gen II Prius. What was standard were the two 12V auxiliary power outlets.

I think whoever told you that "AUX" audio was standard was confusing the optional auxiliary audio jack with the standard 12V auxiliary power outlets.

Anyways, good luck on your desired modification. I could be wrong, but I think there are a lot of threads here about it. So doing a search might be worthwhile.

No, I believe the 07 is the lucky lottery winner for always having the AUX input. It was one reason why I was on the hunt for just 07's for a while.

No, not 07. I have an 07, and AUX audio jack was included in option package #1 and up. Again, AUX audio jack has never been standard equipment. I believe it was 2006 when it was first made available in option packages.

EDIT: I believe this is the full history of the AUX audio jack's availability in the Gen II:

    2004 - Not Available

    2005 - Not Available

2006 - In Option Package #2 and up

2007 - In Option Package #1 and up (although it might have been difficult, if not impossible, to find a base Prius with no Option Package on it)

2008 - In Option Package #2 and up

2009 - In Option Package #2 and up

I have a base model '07 that does not have factory Aux. I added a GROM USB2 (gromaudio.com) which gives me aux, iPod, and USB (i.e. memory stick) integration. You can get one with just Aux if you want. Your radio should have an unused CD changer port on the back which is how the Grom unit connects. Other companies also have Aux units which work the same way. I tried searching this forum using the word Aux and incredibly it finds no matches. Using the word Grom (or DICE) it finds many matches. I suggest you try this as you will find user experience with many of these products. Its always a good idea to contact the vendor to verify their unit will work with you car. Good luck.
