Best Phone App to track mileage?

Hello fellow Prius V owners. Live in San Diego and just transitioned from a '99 Ford Expedition to a Prius V. I no longer feel that stabbing pain every time I fill up and see another $80-100 go in the tank.

I wanted to poll the group and see what type of phone apps are being used to track your mileage. I have the free version of Gas Cubby and so far I am pleased. It keeps track of all the basic stats like gallons, total cost, MPG, etc. Keeps the cumulative cost avg MPG as well.

Its interesting to see the difference between what the car is saying and what the app comes up with for avg MPG based on your distance traveled and actual amount you filled up. It tends to be around 2-3 miles less then what the car reports for the trip.

Any other owners out there with different phone apps?

Hi. Congrats on the Prius V! I'm expecting to pick up my Prius hatchback this weekend. Anyway, I've been using Road Trip and am happy with it:

There's also a Lite/free version.

I use MyCar. It works well. I then transfer the info to Fuelly.com. Don,t they have an app now?

I use the full version of Gas Cubby & Fuelly.com..... Only caveat about Gas Cubby is I can't export my data to Fuelly.

***UPDATE***. I was wrong on the export. You can, in fact, export the Gas Cubby data and import to Fuelly. Takes a bit of tweaking the csv file (rearranging the columns) but that's pretty easy....

Fuelly does not have an app but they do have the mobile site which is what I use for now. I'm debating on another app.

It does appear the v is a tad optimistic with average mpg. Our first fuel up was reporting a little over 3mpg higher than hand calculating. W

I have been a fully user for quite a while now but I have not seen a mobile site. Can you post the URL? I would recommend fully over apps since they collect real world data from many users. Seeing the distribution of MPGs is really valuable.

Actually I use both Fuelly and an app that tracks a lot of other things (expenses etc) and mpg. I just bookmark the above URL (or the home page logged in if you keep cookies longer than a session which I don't.). I'm there but not showing up because I've had one fill up so far as is our v3. I used Fuelly to make a purchase decision so I'm adding data for others doing the same. =)

For iPad and iPhone try MPGforFree.

I use VehiCal. The only feature I need is to track my mileage for work and tax purposes. It does just that. I haven't tested any other apps but I may check a few posted in the thread.

Hi folks... I'm new here. Just picked up our V on Friday and I can't believe how fantastic it is.

Anyway, since it's a corporate lease for my company, I needed an app so we could account for personal use. After poking around in a few freebies, I found "Trip Miles" and it seems to be quite the excellent little app.

Once setup you can assign a variety of Mileage rates, drivers and favourite trips. I'm not saying it's the best out there because it's the only paid app I've tried - it doesn't calculate fuel economy or anything, but that's ok - I have fuelly for that; so I guess it depends on what you're trying to track.

Anyway, life is great as a Prius V owner! Thanks for this wonderful community.

Gas Cubby.

When you turn the phone side ways, it gives you more detailed information including graphs. Also can use to track multiple cars and set up maintenance reminders that will remind you based off your mileage entries.

I use Road Trip personally but picked up an app that was free the other day called iCarBaby. It could handle expenses, fuel, electricity if you plug in and so on. Not bad for the price but I don't think it is always free. W

My son loves gas cubby for his app but at this time only available for the iphone. I have an android system, so I just started using fuelly.

Why is it that so many of these apps require you to enter the odometer reading? This assumes that you are going to record every fill up. I don't intend to record them all. I just want to do this once and a while out of curiosity.
MPGforFree lets you enter # of miles driven, but it is a pretty bare bones app. Not much info displayed.
Haven't found one yet that I really like.

I have been using the free version of Gas Cubby since I bought the car. Entering odometer reading for every fill up also allows it to average your MPG over the life of the car. I enter all the basic numbers each fill up which is nice to have a running tally of gallons, MPG, cost per gallon, and total cost. Just make sure you always do full fill ups so the numbers are accurate. As someone pointed out earlier, if you change to landscape view, Gas Cubby gives you some graphs and charts. As an engineer I love my graphs and charts.

My vote is not an app, but using Fuelly. Great to tack fuel usage, and to see how you compare to others. You can also friend other Fuelly members like some of us on priuschat!

I use gas cubby. It is fantastic. It tracks all sorts of handy information. It also tracks why I'm excited to be adding a Prius to my fleet.

I like Fuelly as well, especially with the ability to feed data using SMS. I used to use GasCubby, which was also great until the phone reset and all of the data was lost. This was a long time ago and I suspect that the online sync works pretty well. Maybe I'll try it again this summer when I'm in Canada as I'm not going to pay for international roaming. It would be great if these sites worked together but everyone seems to want to be their own island...

I use Fuelly exclusively. Even with an iPhone, I just sent them a text and they send back my MPG, etc. with a link to the mobile page. You can also reach it at fuel.ly which gives a lot of choices of ways to look at your data.

Here's a task I use in Tasker for Android that automates the Fuelly SMS (txt message) update process. It's not groundbreaking, but simply by pressing a widget on my screen it prompts to input 3 numbers (miles, price, gallons) then automatically sends the SMS to Fuelly.

For this to work properly you have to setup your Fuelly account to accept SMS updates from your specific phone number. Also, you might want to double-check to make sure the phone number to send to Fuelly is the same as the one I show in my screen shot below - not sure if that's user-dependent.

* Create a new task named "Fuelly."
* Add 3 "Variable Query" actions, 1 each for trip mileage (%Gasodometer), gas price (%Gasprice), and gallons pumped (%Gasgallons) - (see #s 1-3 below in the first image below).
* Add "Send SMS" action. Add the phone number for Fuelly under "Number" and then under "Message" input your variables from above in the order of Miles, Price and Gallons as required by Fuelly - in my case the message reads "%Gasodometer %Gasprice %Gasgallons" (see 2nd image below)
* Add 3 "Variable Clear" actions to clear the variables for Miles, Price and Gallons (use the same variables as you did in the "Variable Query" actions above) - see 1st image below.
* Once complete you just have to add a Tasker widget to your screen and link it to the "Fuelly" task you just created.

When you fuel up, just click the widget on your phone and you will be prompted to input your trip data and the SMS will be sent automatically.

When you click the widget, Tasker will prompt you to input your data (in this case, my odometer reading first, then the next box will be fill-up price, then the final input box will be gallons pumped). After the final data input the SMS is sent automatically.
