15mpg to 20mpg is a 25% increase! This is radically substantial for GM, but no less intrusive on the environment - so what did GM think they would learn? Worst yet, $72k for 4 rubber wheels on the ground? Gads!

No more expensive than the Lexus LX570 and it gets better mileage even without the hybrid option. Take a test drive of the two vehicles, the Lexus is not even close on any level.

Just to be the devil's advocate here, I had my very first ride in an Escalade in NYC recently as a passenger, and it was really comfortable. Also, with the price of gas at what? $1.65, the same as it was in Feb 2003, if folks want one of these, and they can get financing, I don't think the price of gas in the short term will enter their thinking.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm thinking long term and I want to see everyone driving a hybrid or EV eventually. The fall in gas prices will probably (sadly) stall that trend for now.

Hey, how come everyone is dis'ing the car that might help get some of our Detroit bailout cash back?

Assuming that GM is able to borrow (steal) about $10 billion from the US taxpayers, here's a few rough assumptions on how many Escalades that GM will need to sell to get our money back.

At $72K apiece, how about assuming that GM makes $50K profit per vehicle since the Escalade is pretty much a tarted up cheap truck. Now dividing $10 billion by $50K, you end up with 200,000 Escalades that GM needs to sell to get our money back. Hopefully there's that many dumb people on the planet (with lots of money)?

GM cannot shut down the factory building the Escalades until they have a more fuel efficient model to replace it. Shutting it down GM still have to pay the UAW workers while they are doing nothing, might as well making something that can still make some profit.
This is such a mess that the Big-3 and UAW got into.

my co worker's husband works in a shop near the interstate and had one towed in this past week. the customer had had the thing for 7 weeks and it had broken down twice prior to being towed into his shop......needless to say the shop said eff that and had the heap towed to a dealership to get worked on.

I was wondering how long it would be until our 'support-GM-no-matter-how-lame' cheer leader would come along. But I already knew how the wrong would be reconciled. The age old "well Tommy did it first" excuse. It doesn't wash with children, and it doesn't wash with adults. GM bet the bank that society would go on & on & on ... no down turns ... everyone continues to be flushed w/ so much money that they could throw it away on things like this. Now they want a bailout. In essence we ALL get to by 3 ton Escalade, vis a vis our tax dollars.

Another "substituting oil for knowledge" vehicle. When will GM apply the knowledge? Oh, right, their was the EV1, now "recycled" and the Volt - that came to a complete halt in the Frontline investigation "Heat." I get the feeling, despite all the rhetoric, GM is not able to listen, think critically or apply any knowledge.

So let me get this straight, in your view it is good business if toyota builds the Lexus SUV but bad business if GM builds the Escalade. In your view how can GM win? I guess GM should just take its jobs and go home, then you could be happy importing your cars and trucks from Japan. Hopefully your pension, stocks, and retirement will be funded by the Japanese government.

Not all Toyota's are built in Japan in case you didn't know. GM builds vehicles in Mexico and Canada to name 2. The Sequioa, Tundra, Land Cruiser, Camry, Corolla, Tacoma are built in the US. I know Pontiac makes the Vibe in Northern/Central CA and it is based on the Matrix platform. The fact that GM is making one of their biggest vehicles into a Hybrid that costs $70k which not many people can afford shows that they're not serious about efficiency. Even their Malibu Hybrid gets worse mileage than a 4cyl Camry.

Drive a Yaris and an Aveo. Which one has better quality? The Yaris is Toyota's lowest level car in the US yet the interior feels much sturdier than the Aveo which by the way is Korean built.

Average Toyota assembled in the US has 20% less domestic content than a Chevy or Ford.

If so many Toyotas are made in the US with US parts how can Toyota be exporting more than $3 billion/month?

Ok, I stand corrected. I still think GM needs to work on their engineering and products. They make good looking cars, but some of the interior materials are not exactly quality. The hard plastic feels cheap and brittle. The engines are not as efficient as they could be and what is up with a 4 speed automatic when most makers are with 5, 6 and 8 speed autos.

I owned a couple over the years and regretted both. Also regretted selling my last Toyota and "...go over to the dark side." So glad now to be a Toyota owner again and owning a Prius!

do me a favor and test drive camry and then test drive a malibu, do the same with the tundra and the silverado, the sequoia and the tahoe. Test-drive them and then give me your honest opinion on here or send me a private message.

Well, they can make an Escalade hybrid...so what's stopping them from hybriding the rest of their product line? Make use of the technology to produce vehicles that get 40+ mpg...then buyers will flock to them.

And, just as an aside, if Tesla can create an EV that gets over 200 miles per charge, what in the world is stopping GM from doing the same with ANY vehicle? Someone, please explain that to me. It is proven that the technology is there...so why not do it? What IS the problem with producing a Volt...and why max 40 miles before a recharge?
