California Prius drivers with carpool decals have received a 6 month reprieve from the California Legislature. Originally scheduled to close down access to HOV lanes for hybrid drivers on January 1, 2011, the shutoff date has now been extended to July 1, 2011.
85,000 California drivers have been granted single driver access to carpool lanes since the program began, with a far majority of them being Prius drivers.
The white stickers, providing access to HOV lanes for plug-in cars, electric vehicles and hydrogren cars, have also been extended to 2015.

I'm glad, in a way . . . but the stickers no longer incentivize NEW hybrid owners ... so the legislatige intent has no rational basis. Oh ... I'm talking legislators ... never mind.

    ;)

Wow! That's surprising. Too bad I'm no longer in CA. :( The stickers I've got on my car are useless up here in WA.

Does anyone know if there is a possibility of signing a petition or another method of extending the use of the california HOV lane use?
I have a long commute and greatly appreciate the use of the HOV lane.

Will the Prius plug in by Toyota qualify for a White sticker?

Not yet. The bill has passed the State Assembly but still needs Senate concurrence and a signature or non-veto from the Governator.

Wow Danny, you guys find everything huh???

Hill, there's another thought in place when it came to extending these stickers, think it through and see if you can all hypothesize the benefit in mind!

Many of our own employees are also holding their breath on this one and hoping it passes as they live the LA commute and would really like their stickers extended an extra 6 months!

    Best,
Erica Gartsbeyn, Prius Product Marketing, Toyota USA

After reading SB 535, it seems that Plug-in Hybrids such as the Toyota Prius Plug-In may get a "green" sticker and that the requirement of 65MPG was taken out.

Here is hoping the Plug in will qualify for the new green sticker.

How much would you pay yearly to keep this privilege? I would pay $100 yearly.

I'll take the extra six months...but I once read a post on this that said that they can 'pry my stickers out of my cold dead hands' and thats the way I feel. I'm telling you all right now...we need to keep the pressure on the Governor to extend it even more. Even after July 2011, i figure the CHP will have better things to do than to chase me down in the HOV lanes...and even if they do, I'm good for a few warnings from that point on.

Hey, was that you I saw in the I-5 (Southbound) HOV lane yesterday -- by yourself? :p

I was passed by a light-colored Prius with CA HOV stickers, and a WA license plate... my first thought was "Hey, those don't work here!"

Okay, I'll even admit that the car I saw didn't stay in the HOV lane... it went in, around someone, then moved back out of it.

I looked into the bill extending carpool access for the yellow stickers (California Senate Bill 535) and it has passed the state assembly, but not the state senate. Therefore, it has not been signed by the governor. We're still waiting to be extended! The white stickers for CNG vehicles was just signed by the governor today (AB 1500) extending their access to 2015.

The AB1500 bill addressed the white stickers, so your Tesla can go in the Caropool lane until 2015.

Question is - will the new green stickers in SB 535 (still to go to the Senate for re-approval) work for the Plug in Prius? When will it be available?

And will the stickers be available for aftermarket conversions for the PHEV Prius? I'm on the fence in regards to converting my 2005 Prius to a PHEV. I just don't know if it would be cost effective based on SB 535 and if I can get the 100+mpg that is claimed. Who knows?

Nope. It wasn't me. I have a white 2nd gen.

I haven't been on I-5 all week yet as I live and work on the Eastside. 7/6/10 was a work day and I think I was work that day until past 10 pm. :(

Weird! I don't think I've seen any/many other cars w/CA HOV stickers in WA.

Oregon doesn't stop them at the border?

I think I've figured out how you could sell your CA HOV sticker . . . offer it forsale with the bidding starting at the base price of a new bumper. <grins>

    SB 535 has passed?

Looks like we can re-apply for stickers? Including us 2010 drivers? Am I reading that right?

Looks like the DMV and ARB website have not been updated yet.
