My Prius just reached 200000 km this week. I bought it at 180000 km 2 years ago, I don't drive it that much simply because I work from home.

Today, a sunny day, 0 degrees, the check engine just lit-up. I opened the hood and checked fluid levels, all OK. I started it and listened to the engine, running as usual. However, when the motor stopped (hybrid ON), I can hear a high frequency noise. I don't remember hearing this noise, but I don't think I ever opened the hood with the engine Off but powered On.

How can I get the check engine code ? I assume I need a connector, right ?

hmmm... might want to check the 12 volt. auto parts stores will sometimes read codes for you.

OBD is pretty much directly below the steering wheel column. It's not that obvious, look with a light.

Not all OBD II tools are compatible with the Prius.

ScanGauge II is known to work.

A mini-VCI cable with Techstream software is what basically Toyota uses.

FYI, it's normal to have a high pitched whine when the Prius is in Ready mode, it's the inverter.

K thanks. My mpg is pretty low, there's a good chance it's the 12v battery, we'll see this afternoon

Seems to be a oxygen sensor issue.

12v battery is 11.8v no accessory. 11.7 with accessories, drops to 11.3 when turning ON

Ok some news. We cleared the code, then hopped on the car and started it. It didn't start, lights were on in the dash.

Checked again the 12V battery, was 9 Volts! After a few tries, I was able to start the car.

Need a new battery, and fast.

Battery replaced with the optima one. Took 15 minutes. Code disappeared. It's running well now, mpg went up.
