Chrysler's sales have taken the hardest hit, but the Auburn Hills-based automaker appeared to be behind other automakers that have touted plans to launch electric vehicles in the next few years.
Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda said Tuesday that the company is further ahead on developing electric vehicles than many had thought, but it kept the cars secret until recently.

Awesome!!! If both GM and Chrysler have EVs, then Toyota [hopefully] will get a lot more serious about the plug-in Prius.

Chrysler is sooooo desparate, they must think such a publicity stunt will increase their stock price. They don't have to deliver, ever, on such a statement.

Chrysler doesn't have to worry about its stock price since it is a privately-held company (it has no publicly-traded stock). Chrysler's management does have to worry about their jobs though, because the company that owns Chrysler, Cerberus Capital, is getting rather impatient that its investment is not generating any returns.

I was rather amused that Cerberus hired Bob Nardelli as Chrysler's CEO a couple years ago when it took the company private from Daimler. Bob Nardelli was infamous as the guy who ran Home Depot into the ground and collected a $210-million golden parachute. I just can't picture someone with such incompetance and greed ever turning Chrysler around.

UMM they are a private company. They could care less. If this is any kind of "stunt" it is to make sure they get some of the federal loan money that is going to GM and Ford.

If that jeep can tow then I will be all over it. That's for sure.

Chrysler has been selling these things for YEARS!!!! They are marketed to retirement communities, Islands (such as Catalina that ban cars) and mintenance staffs for large commercial developments. So Chrysler has a lot more experience with battery powered vehicles than most people realize and it would be neat to see them just leapfrog ahead of GM by electrifying some of its large gas sellers such as the minivan a small SUV and a sports car! Now just a sedan (300? Avenger?) and a micro/mini (Jeep Compass?) and yours set.

American car companies have to stop seeing themselves as extensions of Big Oil if they are to survive. That has been one of the main reasons they have lost market share to the Japanese.

Have to give them some credit for attempting something at least. Maybe they aren't counting on the $25 billion bail out? I say we let them die trying.

I agree-- but it is really hard to believe that Chrysler has suddenly come up with anything revolutionary when all they have now are complete duds--if not ancient and dated design (300), then clunky, uncompetitive vehicles (such as the Caliber) that are always poorly reviewed.

I saw a segment on CNBC on Chrysler this morning w/Nardelli and company. They briefly showed all the electric cars they've announced and mentioned a fairly high # of sales for the NEV. http://www.gemcar.com/uploads/resources/561/gem-electric-cars-celebrate-energy-independence-day.pdf says they've sold over 36K NEVs.

NEV's are great ideas.

But as for the recent announcements, I chalk them up to lobbying for bailout money.

I saw the announcement live on CNBC and was not expecting it. It was not just the Peapod but thre other cars, two conversions and one all new electric sports car. What made it so much better then the GM stuff is that they were real.

The REPORTER was allowed to drive the all electric sports car. He loved it! They didn't announce a concept first, drag it out and make a big deal about being green before they actually are. They just said "this is our future" and we are going to produce ALL of these vehicles.

I wonder how long it will be before a Volt gets driven by a reporter.
