"Chrysler is planning to bring a hybrid-electric Dodge Ram pickup to the U.S. market by 2010. Later this year, Chrysler will also introduce the Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids. Supposedly this is just the beginning of Chrysler’s hybrid onslaught. Jim Press, Chrysler’s new vice president, said previously that that Chrysler “absolutely” expects to provide a hybrid or diesel variants of all their models."

(If no one else offers a hybrid truck, Dodge will have the market to themselves)

"Nissan and Chrysler announced a deal in which both automakers will share vehicles. Chrysler will get a Nissan small car to sell in North America while Nissan’s next-generation Titan will be built by Chrysler. While C.E.O. Nardelli did not name any automakers that Chrysler is considering, he said that any future decisions depend on the market demand."
Chrysler open to buying models from other automakers

"Chrysler will be launching its first hybrids later this year with the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and the Dodge Durango HEMI SUVs. The company is already exploring the possibility of expanding its hybrid offerings into other vehicles. According to Mike Accavitti, Dodge Brand director, Chrysler’s engineers are looking on what car will go hybrid next"

So, EVERYONE'S coming out with hybrid cars in the next few years. The market will be swamped.

What do you think Toyota will do to keep ahead of the crowd? Or will they?
  2. TonyPSchaefer
I can only hope the market will be swamped with hybrids. It's about time.

My hope is we start to see hybrid drivetrains in EVERYTHING... think how much fun it would be to have say a hybrid Acura RDX or hybrid Scion Xb... or, dare I say it?, a convertible??

all cheer for a hybrid MIATA!!!

Agreed, more competition and more options are good for everybody. Unless Toyota is really asleep at the wheel they shouldn't have much to worry about. A 10 year head start on the technology is a huge advantage that they should be able to continue to leverage. Being in it early I believe their patent coverage is pretty good too. Hence the whole Ford Escape royalty payment issue.

I'd really like that. I like Chrysler and Dodge and Jeep, but we'll see.

Hopefully they don't make the same mistakes that GM, and really almost every other Hybrid manufacturer (except Prius, insight, HCH), has made by making Hybrid's that don't get significantly better mileage than current models.

until you get me a mpg (which isnt just 1 mpg better) and a confirmation of delivery for these cars to the sales lot i dont believe it or care

Friggity frack frack! When is the market going to be swamped with a hybrid minivan or small SUV with good mpg!!
  10. Tideland Prius
    'bout time.

Oh I'm sure Toyota will come out with things. Just look at the Gen 2 vs. Gen 1. It didn't have much competition but what did Toyota come up with?

    - it improved the gun-grip type shifter with a joystick control unit
    - gave us a push-button start
    - gave us SKS
    - bluetooth
    - the latest navigation with a larger 7" screen (old one was 6.5")
    - reverse camera (on Japanese models for 2004/05)
    - Intelligent Parking Assist (Japan 2004, Euro 2006)

One can only imagine what will be on the new Prius.

    and . . .
-better performance (mpg, battery, and power)
    -more interior room
    -unique styling (interior and exterior)

One can only hope the new competition is more than a gimmick and truly spawns new technology and innovation. Most times when something gets "hot" the competition is nothing more than a low quality copy of the original.

With all of the GM bashing out there... why not Chrysler bashing. They have not sold any hybrids to the general public (though they have leased, hand picked some customers a few).

GM is way ahead of Chrysler in fuel economy and hybrids. Chrysler is not even intending to bring out any hybrids other then trucks, GM is doing midsized cars at least.
