At 4.00 a gallon and a bladder of 11.9 (give or take) 43 probably is about right...if my math is right.

The article said regular was $4.14 at that station so for $43 dollars he put in about 10.4 gallons.

He must be a "flashing pip" guy. Not me, two pips and I'm off to get gas.

Save yourself some grief and don't assume close to 11 gallons unless you are in the summer and run it down to the last pip or a flashing pip. Assuming more than 9-10 gallons in the summer and more then 8-9 gallons in the winter is asking to run out of gas (assuming the newer models haven't improved the gas gauge).

Still setting around $30 per tank here, but haven't fill up since it jumped the 25 cents or so the last couple of weeks.

We were super broke the last few weeks, so when the last pip started flashing all I could do was put in $20. It bought me ~6.1 gallons at ~$3.28. I ended up making it 348 miles over the next week and a half before the last pip started blinking the night before pay-day

The subject of the article is a full size van pulling a horse trailer in a state where regular gas is over $4 per gallon. From personal experience it makes sense.

JMO, but I don't think that the Prius is "pint sized". A Golf is pint sized and a tall boy is pint sized, but not a Prius.

Sort of off topic with this, but it really pisses me off to no end when people complain how much it costs to fill up. You made a choice, live with it. However, when I go to the store and all the food items have risen anywhere from 25% to 50% just because the price of fuel has risen that upsets me. The "I have every right to drive this behemoth" mind set and fuel consumption has finally affected me in a way that I can't control with driving habits.

I am sooo upset that it may very well cost me more than $24 to fill up tomorrow if I can get 7 gallons into the bladder. This is just awful! The end of civilization as we now it is nigh!

Now when I'm filling the Prius, someone invariably asks how I like the Prius and do I really get good mileage.

Well I filled my Prius at Kings Canyon a couple of hundred kilometres from Ayres Rock (Ularu) and at $1.90AU per litre it cost me about $70AU to put 37 litres in my 45 litre tank. That is about $65.74US

In Adelaide petrol is about $1.40 to $1.50 per litre so the same fill would be about $53.60AU or $50.35US. This is just 37 litres.

If the Prius is actually "pint sized," then you can only put 1/8 of a gallon of gas in it. And that's only if you fill the whole car with gas.

While our gas is not yet over $4.00, I always and always have filled up my cars when it comes time to refuel. It would be interesting to find out how many people actually fill up their autos tank completely or just put in a fixed amount, say $2.00, $5.00, or $10.00. To be that short of cash on a consistent basis only indicates you are living far beyond your means.

Take a look at the pumps when pulling into a gas station. I am always amazed at how many pumps only indicate $5.00 or so of sale. Seems to be the same mentality as those who rejoice at getting money back on their tax returns thinking they "screwed" the government out of X amount of dollars...

That would be my wife, she will never just fill it up. She rarely puts more then $20 in her VW. Rarely do I ever see more then a quarter tank in that car at any given time unless I filled it for her.

Diesel, my F350 has been parked for a very long time since Diesel exceeded $4 a gallon and my last fill of 22 gallons exceeded $120. If I were still driving that, I would be spending close to $200 a week in fuel, the Prius in the winter was costing ~$50 a week, ~$30 a week in the summer. Be interesting to see how the Camry does.

I'm not sure of two things:

1. How does putting a fixed amount of dollars-worth-of-gas in the tank mean that you're short of money?

2. How does driving to the gas station more often to fill not-all-the-way-up help to *save* money?

Sure would be great if we could have cars that could be filled from the energy produced from solar panels on our roofs! Nah. That would never work. If I went that route I'd be prevented from ever towing my speed boat across the country.
