    Hello all,

Just bought a used 2012 White Prius Plug-in Base with 18,000 miles. Want to drop a line and say hello, and a word of thanks because I spend a lot of time researching about the car and gained a lot of real world insights from everyone here. Looking forward for some happy EV and HV commute and less visits to the pump. Not to mention some awesome conversation with you guys.

I used to have a 2007 Prius but traded it in for a Honda Accord back in 2010. Decided to come back to the Prius family because two kids and a van later, this switch seems to make a lot of sense, especially my out of pocket cost for this car is only $4,000. I did some spreadsheet calculation based on my driving habits and fuel cost with my current car I should be saving almost $2,000 in fuel cost per year. We'll see how much of this $2,000 I can truly realize.

$2000 per year estimated...does this include electric energy costs? If not, real figures might actually be around $900 or so :p

@inferno - yes you are right, does not include electric energy cost. I will have to look and see the different with my incoming bills. I do have an advantage though, my company approved me to plug it in during the day, so that's my afternoon commute home covered. :)

What was the price of the used PiP? If you don't mind me asking. I know you paid $4000 out of pocket but just curious what used ones go for.

    @Pasaman - Sure I don't mind sharing...

There were several for me to pick from, generally posted for between 22k to 25k with less than 20k miles on them. I saw two to three Plug-in Advanced with LED headlights asking 25k - 28k with less than 20,000 miles. After negotiation my 2012 Plug-in base with 18,000 miles is 21,500. You can expect to add about 1k if it is a 2013.

Depends on what you were driving and how you were driving it, but you can save a lot of money with the Prius. In my case, I drove a 2009 Toyota Corolla for mainly commuting, and it was costing me $200 more per month than I'm spending now with my PiP, for the same type of driving. That's a $2400 a year savings, and in the process, I gain more cargo room and a much nicer ride.

Again - energy costs? I can see $200 a month in savings for gas only...but people forget - Teslas and Leafs still cost money to charge! And in my town it's 17 cents per KWh which is roughly $3.4 / gallon of gas equivalent, around 28 cents savings per gallon :p So on a 10 gal fill, (and this is only if I recharge that worth) I'd save myself $2.80 cents. But I'm estimating on a 10 EV mile average and about 4 KW charge (I know that's not real world, but maybe average?)

Most of my mileage comes from burning gasoline. I only plug in when it's convenient, which isn't most of the time.

Agreed. The car I replaced is a Subaru Outback, which I have been averaging 28.5MPG and a average monthly fuel cost of about $240. If I can pull 75mpg with this PiP then the cost should go down to $85. Again these are all on paper and in theory type of calculation, so I can't confirm these figures until I start driving it.

I have a "Automatic" gadget plugged into my Outback and that's been tracking between 200 - 250 miles per week. Too bad the PiP isn't really compatible with Automatic...

Let's see, a full charge is about 3KWh from the wall (counting charging losses) = $0.51 at your electric rates. A full charge gets you about 13 miles, which is about 1/4 gallon of gasoline. So that makes your fuel cost on electricity be equivalent to about $2.04/gallon. At least, that is what my numbers say :)

If a Tesla can do 333W/mi (which it can, better even for some Tesla owners), thats 3 miles per $0.17 of electricity. So to go 50 miles (which I'm assuming you are using by comparing with your 2010 Prius), it would cost a Tesla $2.80, which would be about $0.88 a gallon savings based on your $3.68 per gallon scenario. So to go an equivalent number of miles as a 10 gallon fill in a Prius, it would be saving $8.80 per tank. I'm not sure what W/mi a Leaf does, but I bet its better than a Tesla MS.

Your earlier comment about $2000 of gas savings turning into $900 would only happen with a crazy amount of EV miles.. at your rate of $0.17, that would pay for about 6,500kWh.. lets say the PiP gets 270W/mi (which it can, some better), that would be 24,000 miles of pure EV from the wall, per year from his home (although he said he's getting juice at work too)

    A PiP's full charge is about 3kW

On most days, my 40-mile round-trip commute averages 56 usmpg. It's mostly at freeway speeds at 50-60 mph, with 3 traffic lights en-route. My best mileage on the commute has been 60 mpg, and some days it's as low as 49. All of these numbers are without any plugging-in.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to be selling my 2014 with 8k miles so I am trying to gather info right now.

Your electric to gasoline cost ratio is off a bit.

    Let's do a quick check:
You can go about (arguably for calculation sake) 11 miles on 3kWh (or in your case, $.51). If you get nominally 50mpg on gasoline, your equivalent cost is approximately $.51 x 5 or $2.50/gal. That's a lot better than $3.40 and this is a conservative estimate (lowball EV range).

At 15 miles EV range (and assuming the same 50mpg), your equivalent cost is $.51 x 3.3 or about$1.80/gal. That comports with what I've come to see as a quick and dirty way to calculate kWh cost to gasoline: about 10x your kWh rate.

Why are you thinking about selling? Seems rather new to be selling a PiP? Moving on to something else?
