PDF I did when I installed a backup alarm in my left rear taillight. Includes step by step and pictures. Starts with disabling the reverse beep if that's all you want. Some of this was copied from others and then compiled. Don't remember who to give credit to anymore.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, What is a backup buzzer/alarm? And how is that different from the reverse beep? I'm wondering if it is a gizmo that starts making noise when you get close to something?

The difference is that the reverse beep can only be heard on the inside, while the buzzer will be heard outside while the Prius is backing up (in order to warn people). JC Whitney has several types, including one that says, "This car is backing up!"

The gizmo you're thinking about is a reverse backup sensor, which again would only be heard on the inside.

How to shut off the beeping

    1. Power on the car to IG-ON or READY. IG-ON will do for this purpose.
    2. Using the Trip/ODO button, set the Trip/ODO display to ODO (not Trip A or Trip B)
    3. Power off the car.
    4. Now power the car to READY (brake on). This is required so that step 6 works correctly.
    5. Within 6 seconds of powering on, press and hold the Trip/ODO button for 10 seconds or more.
    6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* the 10 seconds, shift the "gear" selector from P to R, then back to P. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
    7. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Trip Odometer or Odometer is normally displayed. "b on" is beep on, and "b off" is beep off.
    8. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
    9. Now power the car off to exit the toggle mode.
    10. Power the car on to READY and confirm the reverse beep status by shifting to R. The beep should not be audible if "b off" was selected, and should be audible if "b on" was selected

This should work if follow the directions carefully. V.

Have no idea where the original PDF went. We have a link at PriusclubSD on the info page.

    I'll upload the pdf again.

Disabling the beep is at the beginning of the document. Installing a backup buzzer is next. I got a buzzer from Radio Shack. Installed it in the rear driver's side taillight. It can be heard outside now, not load but it can be heard.

I'll do this to the next Prius I own also, unless Toyota starts to build them that way.

it is so nice not to have the beeper disturbing the quietness of the cabin. Toyota screwed up by not putting the beeper on the outside. I like the after market one telling people the car is backing up

    Thanks, Godiva!

I saw other instructions regarding disabling the back-up beep on Priuschat that omitted a couple minor details. Now the cabin is ahhh-so-quiet.

When I first drove away Prius IV 2010 from the dealer, it started beeping. I saw something wrong. Right the way, I called the sales rep to check, and ask when the beep is not on the outside. Now I know the Toyota screwed up the designed. Question, I have 7 year bumper-to-bumper warranty from Toyota. If disable peeper and install alarm, would this void the warranty? Thanks,

This works great until you let someone borrow your car or leave it at the oil changer place where they don't know how to read a gearshift knob... I had to re-enable mine because I forgot that "others" use my car as well.

I know this is a Gen 2 thread, but the search keeps bringing me here for this Reverse warning beeping. Any chance someone knows the steps for the Gen 3?

I do. Take it to the dealer, and ask that they disable reverse beep.

Toyota made it require ODB-II hardware. If you have an ODB-II device like the scangauge II, you can use that.
