I no longer make this. There is now a factory Y cable that does the same thing for the remote start module. 11/2013

DIY Prius remote engine starter, gen III. It's my home made, modified, custom wired remote start module, for self install, that I just finished. 1 year in the making and many trial and errors later. Uses OEM key fob. Easy install for Prius Keyless Remote Starter

Here's the final DIY Prius remote engine starter kit. Easy install and removal.
DIY Aftermarket Prius remote engine starter, easy install 2010-2012
    My Requirements
    • My goal was to allow anyone here at Prius Chat to install the remote start.
    • Make it plug and play.
    • Can be removed with little evidence of the car modification. (Some people are concerned the dealer might try to void the warranty when they go for service or repairs).
    • Have longer than 10min run times. (I had 10 mins and it does not warm up enough for my taste and I don't like to hit the remote over and over).
    • OEM fob. I don't want a second fob to carry around.
    • Range must be from house to driveway for winter, morning, warm ups.
    • No dealer programming required, this usually requires additional $$
    Final Product consist of
    • Self install, almost, plug and play, only 2 wires (green and purple behind the remote mirror adjustment controls) to be attached to car. See pic below .
    • Removable via the two colored wires and a plug-in harness.
    • I can program it with my friends dealer computer, one time for you to run 15, 25, 30, 45 or 60 mins. No extra cost
    • Comes programmed to work on Gen III, 2010-2012.
    • OEM remote, so the remote range to the driveway is met.
    • To start: Hit lock, lock then a third time hold lock button for 3 sec on OEM fob. Watch corner lights flash a few times, it's running.

Here are the two wires, green and purple that need to be attached to the car. They are behind the side mirror control panel, lower left of the steering wheel. That's it.

Wow, we're getting some serious mods here in Prius chat. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have much use for a remote start where I live. ;)

Yes, please post up some pics. (y)

I will vouche for rrg as being a stand-up guy and willing to work through a methodical approach to develop something of value to PC members. He helped me work out my key cutting procedure and also with an experimental foray into remote fob programming. I would recommend that anyone meeting the minimum standards & having a desire for remote starting to contact him. I too live in an environment where remote start is unneeded.

Congrats mate! It looks like you have a nice kit.

Here's the final pic of the DIY Prius remote engine starter gen III 2010-2012.
I added the photo of the finished product here and to the first post.

    How Easy is That! (y)

Remember my goal, anyone could install it and remove it.

Two wire is really close to meeting my original goal. I did investigate making a T harness and getting extra Toyota connectors to completely get rid of the two wires. I couldn't find them anywhere and thought it added extra work to remove the entire connector from the car. This is a much more elegant, simple solution IMO.

us remote start easy install, self install Prius remote start kit.
PS I had this setup working together with my ScanguageII for 9 months. No issues.
The scanguage option requires I add a rj45 8 pin connector to the Prius remote engine starter module (below), than use any length cat 5 network computer cable to go to the scanguage plug.

Those wires are pretty thin, maybe 20-22 gauge? Maybe put some heatshrink tubing over the purple and green wires. Can't tell, but you already have a few sections of heatshrink or is it electrical tape holding the two wires together?

The module is just a remote start bypass, they all work the same for the Prius Push-to-Start with similar connections.
I just removed the buzzillion wires the bypass comes with, traced everything out and directly soldered only the Prius needed wires to the harness.
Next, program the unit with my friends dealer computer and put in the run time.
All but the two wires, purple and green reside in the harness.

This is not a Viper alarm system. It only starts the car.

    SFV41901,
If that wire is a general Y cable with all pins connected at the male side to the two female sides than yes. If the cable is specific to the manufacture of your device, maybe no.
That connection is what I essentially have connected with my scanguage II and remote start except it's a rj45 to scanguage.

    Hope that helps.

    I responded to the PMs.
    Thanks.

All the documentation and my test have been on the gen III.

For the PiP, if you are handy and can find the two wires I can send the remote start to you at my expense (part of my development expense) to see if it works. PM me to go over the price and details if you decide to keep it.

UPDATE: In the mean time I will check with the manufacture and confirm the PiP is supported.
2nd UPDATE: The PiP has not been tested yet. It's on the To-Do list.

    Thanks.

I worded my question wrong. Is this a Viper remote start system pre programmed?

It's not a Viper remote start system pre programmed.
From what I was able to research, all of those provide an extra set of key fobs along with still using the OEM fob.

    thank you.

    pholife,
So far the answer is yes, it does work with the oem alarm system.
I want to be certain so I am looking for one more confirmation.
Since I can not test that, it's not on my car, I'm checking with the Alarm/Remote start installers next week.

    Thank you for your compliment.

Us Prius C guys would be very interested. Saved a lot of money on the car itself and have extra money for goodies. I think noticed in one post that you need push button start, if so I guess us C1 and C2 owners are out. Keep up the good work. I am interested.

I just checked the wiring on the Prius C. It is wired differently.

The other cars I found that this remote start module I built will work on is the Prius v 2012-2013 and the Lexus CT200h 2011-2013 with the same connection points as the standard Prius, but I don't have access to those cars to test my wiring.

    Sorry about that.
    Thank you.

So the fob must get left in the box? How's it keep from seeing it as inside the car all the time preventing locking and such? If a third fob can easily be programmed into a Gen III, I'd be interested in this setup. It took an entire day to install the remote start in my truck so this would be SWEET!
