Can it be done DIY, without using a dealer?

Is that standard on the 2010 Prius?

Yep - there have been plenty of posts on this forum complaining about it.

What boggles my mind is that there are people employed by Toyota collectively on millions of dollars of wages who collectively agreed that the Prius customers were going to prefer constant beeping instead of one beep, when you engage reverse.

    Its effing incomprehensible!!

I was told yesterday when I went in to get my new Prius that the beeping was part of a regulation intended to make the driver aware that he was in reverse mode, due to the lack of engine noise. They told me people could place the vehicle into reverse and forget, since the only indicator is a light on the dash, and then let off the break thinking they are in park (due to lack of engine noise).

I don't know if this is true, but I was told that they could not, officially, change the setting for me but would do so free of charge 'off the books' at my first 5000 mile oil change.

What a load of B---S---! Ask your dealer to show you a DMV regulation to that effect. They could not "officially" change the setting but would do so anyway? Where did they take their ethics training???

Most people have complained that the distraction of the constant beeping is actually a safety hazard in and of itself!

No you have to go to a dealer to have them turn it off. Please search as there are various threads discussing this topic already.
