CEO Fields: Ford Will Out-Tesla Tesla Bring EVs to the Masses - The News Wheel

I see this as a good thing, and I'm sure Elon Musk would agree. Tesla has forced automaker's hands into seriously looking into plug-in's thanks to their success with the Model S. And the more carmakers jump on board, the sooner more affordable EV's will come out due to new research and economies of scale bringing the costs down.

I just hope that whatever they bring out isn't a dud.

While high gas prices would speed the adoption of EVs, sales will continue to grow as they learn about how much nicer to drive they are.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw this thread. I nearly choked on my coffee!

Ford have no intention of selling BEVs in any serious number. They talk the talk but nothing else. The Ford Focus EV is sold here in the UK but as previously reported, you'd never know it. It's a fine car apparently, but isn't in any showrooms, or advertised, and is literally hidden on the Ford website. It's more expensive than the BMW i3!?! and is only available from 'one' showroom. As a result they have sold 12 in over 12 months on sale. One a month. Impressive eh?

FORD FOCUS ELECTRIC - How Many Left?

By contrast, Ford have sold 85k traditionally powered Focus's last year.

Until they prove they want to sell BEVs, I'll call BS on what their CEO just said.

what we do know, is that no one will be selling any until we have a battery breakthrough. i hope ford is investing heavily where their mouth is.

My 1st thought - Toyota exec's must be thinking, 'oh, great .... and we're stuck with this ugly overpriced hydrogen monster with no infrastructure .... we're gonna have to crank out more anti EV FUD ads before we rape more taxpayers, just so we can afford another handful of refill stations".
Yep - I'm guessing there'll be some regret in their not too distant future. But hey ... maybe it's not too late for them to work something out with Tesla ... again

I think the headlines about Musk building a "Giga-factory" are starting to manifest a predictable response from Detroit.

    Monthly Plug-In Sales Scorecard
17,139 this year in 10 months in US, they should easily do more than 20,000 for the year.
    19,242 last year

Ford, no, but they got punched in the face with the explorer/tires/roll over and didn't have money to invest. The focus ev and energis were done on the cheap. Now that ford has experience and money to invest they can do some things they couldn't in the past.

Key here is panasonic and lg are vieing for their battery business. I would think either gigafactory sourced or lg sourced batteries will be much cheaper in 2018, and ford, nissan, and gm all will have at least a 120+ mile aer bev then.

Is there any noticeable reason to treat this as anything more than a P.R. fantasy?

    Well, PR Statement perhaps.
However, I get your meaning and am not going to hold my breath.

It is definitely more encouraging than if he said "no one is knocking on our door asking for EVs" ;)

Its really Lexus that will fall behind. That "T" companies premium division will have this model to contend with also in 2 years.
BMW 3 Series eDrive Plug-In Hybrid Revealed - Launch Scheduled For Early 2016

I don't think any of the big US or Japanese autos - gm, ford, toyota, nissan, honda look very attractive for the next 5 years. They are more profitable than 5 years ago, but future cars are a little marred. Growth will likely come from tesla, bmw, mercedes, hyundai.

No, not Tonka. The Amazon UK link won't post. It was/is(?) on the Tesco site but they are being overwhelmed.

    Search for Tonka Quad Bike.

Could not sell hybrids to the masses when gas was about $4.00 a gallon, but plug-ins will soon sell in great numbers with $2.60 a gallon?
