You still have to pay for parking, but the charging is free. There was a Tesla and a Leaf charging there last night.

I'd call it courtesy charging rather than free charging, keeps the 'you plug in expecting free charging punk' people at bay ;) And really that's what is is, a courtesy, since you are in fact already paying to park there.

Good point, which is why I put the " around free. Feel free to edit the thread title to "courtesy" though.

Which Portland, I would hate to pick the wrong one.

Oregon. That's why I included the airport code (PDX).

Fair to call it free if you don't pay for the charging.

Not sure of the practicality of public charging though. If I go to SF for a long weekend of sailing, I want to keep the car charged but I'd be occupying the spot for four days.

Better system going forward, if EV's don't get wiped out by natural gas, would be what they do in truck stops to cut pollution of Diesels running all the time. Put a receptacle at each parking place that driver can plug their equipment into. A four plug down each support pillar that folks could reach would work. Put the free EV charging at the farthest end of the rows so regular car owners are not taking the spots for convenience.

Yeah, I wouldn't park there and fly, but if I am making an airport run to pick someone up, I could get there a little early and get a full charge at level 2 to help with the trip home. (airport is ~25 miles from my house).
I'll leave the park and fly to the Teslas, Volts, and Leafs that can take full advantage of a day's free charging.
