Source: Gasoline Prices Seen Averaging $3.57 Per Gallon During Summer 2014 - Analysis

I was running errands Saturday and noticed prices were in the $3.45 range and still going up. Then I remembered the sharp reduction all hybrid sales last September:

And the relationship to the $3.50/gal gasoline prices:

So I'm thinking we'll likely see Prius hatchback numbers in the range of:
    • 13,000 - low
    • 18,000 - high
Now I've never really accepted the 'government support' argument as being a primary Prius sales incentive because in our area, the dealers used it to mark-up the Prius above MSRP. An HOV pass might work except the Prius thrives in the middle of the traffic jam.

This is one of the reasons why Prius is the best selling car in California. We're already at $4/gallon.

I am monitoring gaso density, by during some fill-ups, getting add'l exactly 1.5-gal into gaso can and getting weight. Seem to be seeing 0.74 g/cc now versus 0.72 g/cc in winter perhaps as summer blends works its way to the pumps. That's about 3% more energy or worth about 10 cents a gallon more. I will keep an eye on it, to see where it goes.

GasBuddy thinks $3.52 this summer, with current up spike due to seasonal refinery maintenance ending in a few weeks. 48 states have seen lower prices 1st quarter 2014 versus 2013.

It's also the reason they give for pickup truck sales being at record levels. I know, I don't follow the logic either, but that is the reason they give for the high truck sale numbers.

You mean nearly $5/gallon. (In some places here in Socal.)

Thank goodness we drive a Prius. Last time I fueled up our SUV, it costed ~$70 for only 400miles (~$4.50/gallon).

Didn't Barrons have a front cover article a week or so ago that oil prices may go down to $75. a barrel which would mean very bad news for Putin?

I think we need to adjust for time. $3.50 gas in 2008 was a spike, now $3.50 is more normal. People have adjusted to the higher price......

As for the incentives on the prius, we just need to understand some stuff that the high school economics might forget. If something has a manufacturing constraint and little competition, then incentives are often pocketed by the monopolist;) This works for both the price of opec oil and for prii in the mid 2000s. Now raising a gas tax does something quite different, it incentives buyers to buy more efficient cars, and in the long run decrease the need for petroleum. A hybrid incentive would work now since toyota has excess capacity from lower demand in Japan and could increase exports to the US. It would not be an efficient use of money though, as a $0.50/gal tax would actually increase national fuel economy more and get you above your magic $3.50 number.:) The state of california is raising the cost of gas through both regulation (bad) and taxation, and the prius sells much better their than any other state. Note their regulation of oil should cause anouther spike there soon, but it won't affect states not on the west coast.

Absolutely brent won't go that low, but harder to refine north american oil may in the short term. That won't reduce the price of anyone's gasoline far, but north american refiners may profit. Its all about regulation.

In Southern California, its costing me $5.00 more a tank then it did last year at this time of year. So prices are not level with last year prices .

Yeah, we've been at $4/gal average for regular in CA for awhile now. http://fuelgaugereport.com/ says the avg in CA for regular is now $4.158.
Google for housing market truck sales.

It looks like california gas is about $0.20/gallon more than a year ago, that is oposed to the US which is about 7.5 cents more than a year, ago. Its pretty easy to point out why california regulation is driving the price higher.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong...but you are saying that in winter, when it is colder you are seeing 0.72 g/cc which is lighter and less dense than 0.74 g/cc. Backwards? Or different formulation?

During the winter, our North Alabama gas has butane dissolved in, which makes starting easier but reduces density.

So. I'm not sure of the point of measuring the density of two formulations at two different temperatures...

Hi Mike- I am trying to measure extent of density (energy content) variations in gasoline. My theory is 10% difference in energy content is possible, going from winter low density E10 to summer high density E0. That could be about 10% MPG difference or up to 5 MPG difference from 50 to 55 MPG, which may explain some of the reports here of higher MPG on E0. My region is EPA reformulated gasoline area, which equates to lower density E10 (lower MPG). But elsewhere in VA (2 hours away) I can get E0 at 87, 89 or 91 octane. I theorize that is much higher energy content, above and beyond the ethanol energy debit. I guess you could say, I am out to prove all gasolines and NOT created equal.
