GM plans to build 'tens of thousands' of Chevy Volt plug-ins, official says

David Shepardson / The Detroit News

WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. plans to build "tens of thousands" Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric cars by 2011, a senior executive said today.
"We're not doing the Volt to sell 500 or 1,000 (vehicles)," Jonathan Lauckner, GM's vice president for global program management, said today at forum sponsored by the Center for American Progress here. "We're talking about tens of thousands and more than that within the year."

Any guesses on how many plug-in Pri will be sold in 2011? I'm thinking 300-350K, GM won't be making up much ground.

tens of thousands in 3 years??....well 10,000 is about how many Priuses are sold in MOST of a SLOW month...

    seriously, wtf is next?

You all are SO missing the point.

    "GM plans to BUILD . . ."

Oh sure, there's a line in the article about how they are "not doing the Volt to sell 500 or 1,000 (vehicles)," but that's not the title of the article nor is it what they focus on. Some on this board have argued that the size and value of a company should not be measured in production but rather in sales. I think Dave's hit the nail when he mentions actual Prius sales.

The full quote from the GM Executive was "GM plans to build 'tens of thousands' of Chevy Volts, then immediately crush and bury them."

wow, just as expensive as the EV-1 and look how well that did... I'm so tired of hearing about all these great 'concept' cars. Tell me about it when I can buy the darn thing. "Gas friendly to gas free" my @ss.

Tens of thousands by the end of 2011. Someone please save this page. I'll bet money that 2011 will show this guy is full of BS.

Notice it is now a plug in and not a hybrid.

I'm not going to believe a word until I see them sitting on a lot for sale.

GM, don't waste your time & effort telling me what you are going to do. JUST DO IT. Oops. That only works if you are selling shoes.

    We all wish that.

Stop with the hype and start building lots of affordable, clean, and efficient hybrids.

I'm still holding Lutz to his first fairytale ... rolling off the assembly line by easter. He promised that wasn't going to be another easter bunny tale.

I'll believe it when I see them in showrooms. Then I'll wait five years so they can iron out most of the bugs. Of course this is assuming that they get a battery which they still don't have.

Wow, I completely missed that one. Nearly 40K for a plug-in that only goes 40 miles in 2011? I don't see many people plunking down almost $40K for a Volt. So much for making one available for the mass public.
  14. Godiva
Then they can say "See, we built them but no one wanted one. Just like the EV1.)
  15. darelldd
I don't understand. The EV1 never cost anything - it was lease only with no option to buy at the end. Nobody ever bought one, so we have no idea what they were sold for. And the EV1 did tremendously well when all aspects of the program were considered. Every one available was snapped up with thousands more on the waiting list. The Volt can only hope to be as popular as the EV1 was... and the EV1 had tons of negative adds to support it!

Sad but I fear it is true. Makes for a nice little ad campaign 4 years (at least) before they bring out the product.

I have a friend at GM... This is the battery they are considering for the Volt...

EV-1 Redux? Or the Impact of an Impact part 2. GM had the battery years ago but after they quashed the EV-1 they sold their shares in the Battery maker and the lot to an Oil company, I think it was our good friends at Exxon.
