Got new tires...

I finally went ahead and got me a set of Michelin Primacy MXV4 this weekend. I was long disappointed with the road noise from OEM Yokohama's. Even with additional soundproofing I've done, the tire noise was way too much, especially at speeds over 55 mph.
Did lots of research on this site and also tirerack.com - Michelin was my choice, and after driving around for a day, the difference is really dramatic - the car has a very different feel to it, it is a lot quieter and the ride is much less bumpy. I gave up about 5mpg from today's test, hopefully it will get better as new tires break in.
Now my car feels almost as Hybrid Camry that I drove yesterday while waiting at the dealership . The handling is not as good, and acceleration is definitely not as quick, but road noise and overall comfort is much better than it used to be with Yokahama's

Guess I am one of those that aren't too picky about their tires. The stock Avids have been ok in my book. But I read in interest threads like yours and F8L's to get an idea for the future (at my current usage, that future is like three years away LOL). Thanks for letting us know....

bear4, how many miles you had on the Yokohamas? From my experiance new tires (even if they are of the same
make/model) are always much quieter and ride better.

I had Yokohama's since new and I replaced them at 9000 miles

The Primacy MXV4 is a great tire but it's terrible for fuel economy compared to other models in this size range.

So far I notice about 5mpg loss compared to Yokohama's. I consider it is a small tradeoff for much better ride quality. New tires coupled with additional soundproofing I've done make a huge difference. Interesting that although I've added almost 60 lbs of weight due to dynapad, I did not see any significant mpg loss from this added weight.

Ohh yeah. They are a comfortable tire and the handle nice. The Energy Saver A/S is much more comfortable and quieter than the Yoko S33D but they don't handle as well as either tire. As long as you're ok with the loss in mpg then you made a good choice. It's a very good tire.

I have had Michelin's, Bridgestone's, Firestone's and Goodyear's over the last 7 years. The Firestone's were the worst, Goodyear's close behind. I have gotten 70k miles out of the Michelin's and 65k out of the Bridgestone's. AND the Michelin's got the best mpg, too. The LRR technology does pay for itself. Don't go cheap on your tires, maximize your mpg and mileage warranty.

What's the difference between the MXV4 and the MXM4?

The MXM4 is more performance oriented and the MXV4 is more comfort and longevity oriented although it does quite well in the handling department. Think of the MXV4 as the Honda Accord and the MXM4 as the Mercedes/Audi.

I'm guessin the V4 gets higher mpg than the M4???

I'm not sure. The MXM4 is newer than the V4 so they may have added new technology to it to lower fuel consumption. The two tires are not always available in the same sizes.

My highway fuel consumption with the 17" MXM4 was virtually identical to the 15" MXV4.

Is it safe to say the mpg difference between the 15's & 17's is in the slower in town driving/stop n go stuff?

I did the same as you and replaced the Yokohama Avid's with the MXV4. Great improvement in noise, ride comfort and handling. I took about a 4-5 mpg hit but now that I have about 20k miles on them and the tread depth has gone from 11/32 to 8/32 the mpg hit is down to about 3 mpg.

No. The hit is everywhere. Remember that most of my commute if freeway and I still observe the hit.

where did you guys place the older tires?

I guessed they were pretty new just like you replaced at less 10K miles.
