They asked the California guy going 94 mpg why he didn't put the car into Neutral. He said he didn't think of it.

    WHAT !!

He went 20 minutes at high speed. What WAS he thinking about?

Hasn't everyone heard that the 1st thing you do is put the car into Neutral.

Sure the first reaction is to apply the brakes. But when that doesn't work, you should be able to tap the shift lever to Neutral.

Too fishy for me to believe.
Next time I'm caught speeding, I have a new excuse to use.

Has ANYONE here at PriusChat had an Accelerator, Stearing or Braking Problem?

Sorry not me, I am too ethical to sue for big money, so I do not qualify for problems I do not have.

    Same as Jimbo here.
However, the Cali guy was TOLD on the phone AND by the cop next to him to put it into N, he refused. When asked by reporters he said, and I quote, "I was scared the car would flip"
Honestly, that was the funniest thing I've heard in a LONG time!

I'm 28, our 06 has 135,000kms (84,000 miles) on it. NOT ONE problem with this car.
My uncle lives down the road from me, he's 51, has a 08 Prius and Hybrid Highlander and again, NO problems with either.
I can't speak for some people as some even on here say they have had some sort of acceleration with their cars, but combined with the Prius' we have over 200,000kms and neither of us have had anything go wrong. We're both first time Toyota owners and will be repeats.

So, will my Prius do flips too, or is this just the 2008 models. I would have paid extra for this feature if it had been documented. :target:

No problems here. I do have a dash rattle. Do you think one of the networks will send out a crew and interview me about it?

I have a brake-throttle override that doesn't work as advertised. I am presently waiting for an opening at the dealer to have the car looked at. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of recall cars in front of my car.

Or another possiblity is that it does work correctly however you don't know how it's supposed to work and have some false expectations. We'll have to wait until the dealer looks at it before we know which.

The guy is talking to the 911 operator and trying to place a call.......did he get his blood alcohol tested, should he be driving anything?
I often go 80-90mph but it is all intended (well sort of, I just did not realize how fast I was going because the car is so easy to handle even at 90+/-)

Re: Has ANYONE here had an Accelerator, Stearing or Braking Problem?

Well, it depends on what you call a "problem". Pearl's brakes will release for 1/2 sec or so if she hits a very sharp bump while braking. I don't consider that a problem, just the way it works.
I have the carpeted floor mats in the car, secured by the clips. In winter (now) I have Weathertech mats on top of them (not secured). I put the passenger side one in the drivers side. The cutout fits the dead pedal perfectly and the mat goes -fully- under the accelerator pedal. There are no edges to catch and it doesn't. Because the dead pedal fits so tightly the mat can't move. This is the soft rubber Weathertech mat, generic size (from the anti-Prius, a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder).
I haven't had any stearing problems, or even steering problems. ;)

One user here has reported an acceleration problem. The cause was never identified and the user traded their GenII for a GenIII.

Re: Has ANYONE here had an Accelerator, Stearing or Braking Problem?

We had a 2005 G2 Prius for about 5 years and never had an issue with any of these things. We've had our 2010 now a little over 2 months and no issues with it either.

Frankly, the Prius has been one of the most reliable and trouble free cars that we have ever owned. BUT, I hope Toyota gets to the bottom of this because it is quite disconcerting to keep hearing all the media hype and hysteria. My wife is the daily driver and is becoming more & more upset about owning the car. I have to keep telling her that I feel most of what we're hearing is just the above hype but I can't truthfully rule out a more sinister cause (defective electronics, EMI, etc.). We have car seats in the rear of the Prius for our 4 and 5 year old Grandsons and we've decided for the time being to move them to my Acura MDX and use that car when transporting the children. I could never forgive myself if any harm came to them and I know my daughter and wife feel the same way.

I hope things are sorted out soon.

My '06 has over 75,000 miles on it, and no problems.

Wait ... I put it into a ditch a month ago driving it in deep snow/ice. Then once it was back in the garage and not driven until a few days ago, the battery was dead.

    Clearly Toyota's fault both times.

Re: Has ANYONE here had an Accelerator, Stearing or Braking Problem?

There was an old thread here where a guy tallked about his accelerator sticking. He kept posting and eventually figured out that it was because he had really big feet which caused some sort of problem. At least he admitted it in the end.

There is a braking and acceleration issue with the Prius. ie. going over bumps causes brakes and/or engine to cut out, but all cars have their quirks.

OTOH, a thread full of people saying they had no problems really does not proove anything.

Yeah, mine actually is quirky like that on occasion, but nothing I can't live with.

OTOH, my hub and his nephew went to Montreal a couple years ago in the Prius. One stretch of interstate had been under repair and the lanes had that annoying grooved-surface thing going on. Nephew (who is in his early 40's), pulled over and made hub drive again because he was terrified of the Prius' handling.

    Nope-no hint of any problems. I have a 2007 with 70K miles....runs like a charm. Can a Prius flip?

In the 3 years I drove the 2007 Prius Touring, and the few weeks I've driven the new 2010 Prius I did have to Scratch My Butt once, really Bad. Otherwise, Nope, Never a Problem. Does That Qualify ? Should I alert the Media ?

It only offers non-scientific evidence that any problems, if they exist, are not very common.

Yes, and it's no bull. Same scenario, went to pass with cruise enabled and the car continued accelerating. It snapped out of it after several seconds, after the driver started pumping switches, controls, brakes, accelerator on and off, but not without giving the driver a good startle. The freeway was moving but lots of other cars. Another second and there would have been an accident.
