At -40? I'd dare him to try to pee outside in those temps

Oh, even better .... I'd DOUBLE dare Pat to lick the metal street light pole.

Yes, I would have a bucket of very warm water standing by, in case Pat was silly enough to take on that last dare. Now that I think of it, the bucket of very warm water would probably help if he took on the first dare too

Minus 20 and tree rats was enough thanks.
The best thing about snow I noticed was getting out of it and I was only there 8 days.

Do moles increase the value? Like selling the house with curtains?

In Australia "mole" has a whole different meaning.

There's an easy solution to chipmunks. Get a 5 gallon bucket, fill it half full with water, add black sunflower seeds such that it totally covers the water. When you look at it then, it looks like a bucket full of seed. Now place a board as a ramp for the chipmunks. They'll then take care of themselves for you. It also works on mice.

Just don't forget what is decomposing in the bucket, if you're in a hurry to wash your hands outside

It's hard to forget it. It can really reek if you forget about it for a couple of days. You need to change the seeds every 3 days or so anyways, as the seeds will eventually fall to the bottom of the bucket.

It's strange that you can have a couple of dead ones floating in the seeds and more will still jump on in. I once had 3 mice and 2 chipmunks in the same bucket. (Followed by relative peace in my strawberry patch that they were raiding). Next up on the kill list...those damn slugs. Time for some beer!

I'll see your 18 years and raise you to 25 years.

I have no real interest in even driving to the mountains to see snow in the winter! :p

I moved to North Dakota in 1970. I moved to Spokane in 2005. But for the sake of honesty, I spent 6 years in Mexico and Spain from around 1995 to middle 2001. So 29 years in the "black north."

    "They came through the passes,
they crossed the dark mountains in a month of snow,
Finding the plain, the bitter water,
the iron rivers of the black North."
-- Thomas McGrath "Letter to an Imaginary Friend"

(McGrath was born in Sheldon, North Dakota, not far from where I lived. The water around Sheldon is nearly undrinkable due to the minerals. Sulfur, I think, in the artesian wells.)

My winter motto: half the fun of getting cold is getting warm again!;)

Ice fishing is easier and more fun than regular fishing. (When you have a nicely heated ice fishing house). Can't fall in, no casting, no jet skiers buzzing by you, and you don't have to hold the rod the whole time. Instead you can play cards and just wait for the bobber to go down.

    Other snow benefits:
    No yard work.
built in freezer/refrigerator just outside the door.
My compost bucket outside the back door isn't swarming with fruit flies.
When you hunt deer, they are easier to track and they don't spoil before you get to butchering.
You rarely sweat unless you overdress.
All the really annoying old rich couples go south for the winter.
For the kids: Snow forts, snow balls, and snow days home from school.

Actually, I left at 18 to join the Navy and only go back to visit. Navy sent me to Orlando, FL for bootcamp, San Diego for school, Virginia Beach and Hawaii as duty stations. When my husband was assigned to the Bremerton Washington Area, I had left the Navy and soon joined the Navy Reserves. I have no complaints about where the Navy sent us! (Was always better weather than back in Minnesota!)

The year I left Minnesota (in January) there was six foot of snow on top of my girlfriends car!

Wow. Points for the Navy. My brother was in the Army, stationed in Panama for 2 yrs (temps around 90F+ with 80% humidity). They brought him back to New England in January when it was below 0F. He wasn't warm again until the following August!

Sorta back on topic: He didn't miss the boot sized bugs in Panama. Those would be right up there with tree rodents.
