In an effort to preserve the new car smell I was thinking about how long I could go without letting any food in my car. Here is a poll to help lighten the mood.

We regularly order from a local food joint that leaves the smell of food for days. (italian beef, gyros, etc) Since my new vehicle arrived, I've picked that food up twice. There is absolutely NO food smell in the car after the bag is removed. I think it may have to do with the Plasmacluster, but I'm totally thrilled!! Still smells new after 19 days!
    :cheer2:

I haven't EATEN in the car yet, though...so that remains to be seen.

So, does this mean that you can't go to the grocery store? And if you do, does it mean that you need to have roof rack for your food to keep it outside of your car? Where can I buy the food-hauling roof rack option (Danny, help)?

P.S. Sorry, I forgot to take my medication today......

Kids haven't been allowed to have anything but water in the car. I've carried food home, and the smells won't linger more than a day, tops! We've eaten in the front seat though on long trips - nothing too sticky, etc.

While preserving the car as "new", it's a place we spend a significant amount of time in and I expect to be just as comfortable treating it the same new as I would at 100k miles.

Since picking up my car and bringing it home will constitute a road trip Im guessing it will be less than 24 hours before that cup holder contains a cup a joe. But eating in will be frowned upon for as long as possible.

I even got one of these to help keep the smell from entering the car when I bring pizza home:

Now that I think about it...I wonder if having leather seats would cut down on the "food smell"? Less cloth for the scent to cling to?

Picked up my new baby today, and was dying of thirst for the long drive home. Got an iced tea because I figured that would leave less of a stain than coffee if it spilled. Irrational, but that's what I thought. I can't lie. As for anything else, I think it will be a while.....

Not really. I had a car with cloth seats and the interior didn't smell like food.

I christened mine with Starbucks coffee the next day. A little spray bottle of oxy carpet fabric cleaner and the seat looks like new. I picked up a couple towels that match the seat fabric to put down on the seats when I am messy before getting in. Only been a couple weeks and have washed the car twice, cleaned Starbucks splashes almost daily of the plastic. Wish Starbucks would make a splash proof cup. I probably should invest in a good travel mug.

I highly recommend the Contigo. They are one of only a couple mugs that are "spill" proof.

Coming from a culture where most people baby their cars, I never eat or have ready-to-eat food inside my car. It's not only the smell... the grease can get to the instrumentation and ruin it and the food particles that drop allow growth of bacteria that deteriorates the interior besides given the bad smell. The popularity of drive thru and obsession about time make many people eat inside their cars and that's one of the reasons I do not like to buy used cars. This is not meant to offend anyone, please don't take me wrong, but eating inside a car is the worst thing you can do for its health besides being gross.

Now, I have a minivan for the whole family and if you have kids you know how difficult it is to keep food out. The leather is very helpful as it is easier to clean up and is less absorbent than cloth. But, still, I try to minimize it by allowing mostly dry snacks, like cheerios, that can be easily vacuumed, is less attractive for bacterial growth, and does not smell a lot.
