    I'm startled to see an HCH with automatic qualifies for $2100, while a "stick" is good for only $1700. What logic could be behind that?

    HCH dropped the manual transmission option for '06, anyway.

    I think it might be because the credit is partially based on improvement of MPG over a previous year's (top of head - 2002?) city MPG.
    The automatic probably had a better percentage improvement than the stick.
