Hypothetical question - PiP Potential 90% Hwy Commute

It depends if you mean 50 miles roundtrip or 50 miles each way. And it depends if you can recharge at work. So:
50 miles r/t with a recharge: Awesome! You'll get around 85 MPG
50 miles r/t without recharge: About 63 MPG
100 miles r/t with recharge: About 63 MPG
100 miles r/t without recharge: About 56 MPG

These are based on driving that would ordinarily get you 50 MPG in a Prius, so adjust up/down accordingly.

That you guys for the mental exercise. I didn't realize the PiPs have no margin so trading in now would seriously put me upside down so despite the potential for some mpg fun it would never pencil out or even come close to breaking even. Thanks to Dianne for talking some sense into me.

Mossy Toyota in San Diego was advertising $3k off of sticker for base PIP. It's a complete lie that "there is no margin."

...since CA has no power plants to the west, any use of EV avoids smog, which is a big problem for CA.
Don't know if Sacramento shares the smog problem. If no smog there, then I see little need if cost is a concern.
If smog is problem, then better half gets the PiP ...sorry.

Yeah, one of the things I'm really enjoying is the short 1 to 6 mile trips without sucking gas into a cold engine.

The nice thing about the PiP is that you can also do a blended EV mode on the freeway above 62mph. This keeps your MPG above 100, using the EV motor and the ICE to maintain freeway speeds. Always best to get a full charge at both ends of your travel.

I live just south of San Francsisco and the road out of my housing complex is steep enough that my PiP can't handle it on battery alone so my cold engine kicks in on every trip.

As for commuting, my commute is 50 miles each way 98% freeway (280S, 380E, 101S, 92E, 880N, 580E, 680N) and I get 50 MPG according to the display. The real kicker is the carpool stickers which shaves substantial time off the trip by virtue of not only the carpool lanes ON the freeway, but also at the metering lights from freeway to freeway.

I have about a 45 mile each way commute that's about 85-90% all freeway. I've been averaging about 62mpg total. The best I did was 74mpg but that was actually going the speed limit. haha

52 miles today, roughly a 50/50 mix of highway & suburb, without recharge.

The result was 83 MPG.

I would love to get one, but can't trade for a new car after only having this one for close to a year. Maybe when the Gen IVs come out.

How is your PiP doing in term of efficiency?

So so. I have only driven it for 250 miles or so and only 2 charges. I'm sitting at 63 or 64mpg right now. I was averaging 54-56mpg in my Three under the same conditions for the last few weeks.

I'm working on getting chargers installed at work or at least an outdoor outlet that I can plug into. They seem receptive and Clipper Creek, manufacturer of charging equipment, is just down the road from me.

These dang PiP threads make me want to trade mine in for one but I can't do anything until June
