Great if it can be used in a production vehicle. The hurdle to that might be the quality of the fuel at the local gas station.

    I loved the topic sentence:

I have sympathy for engine engineers but "bizarre fantasies" pretty well sums it up. The only surprise is how Sterling engines have been left by the side of the road. I have long rooted for a Sterling cycle combined with a modest sized battery pack as a gasoline powered, hybrid battery. But an old man can also dream.

I believe GM actually had one these as a concept.
But the car companies couldn't get government money for sterling engines. Had to go to fuel cells for that.

What became of all that HCCI work that GM did in the early 200o's? Looks like GM is playing second-fiddle to Korea these days, or they'd be testing THEIR own projects down at the Yuma Proving Ground.

The latest news for GM HCCI was from 2009. This is something everybody is working on, and there is no reason to think GM has abandoned it. There isn't much actually new in Hyundai's announcement though, and seems to be mostly for publicity. Was there any word of this getting into a commercial car soon?
