I copied that into the AltaVista Babalfish translator and here's what it said, "According to Microsoft, turning your computer off will protect users from the exploit."

Tom, not to whiz on your parade... but your Linux box is no more secure than any Windows box if you haven't impleneted our own security measures.

Well, it depends on your definition of "secure" (and on your distribution of Linux; if you want a really insane distribution, see here). I would say that a default configuration of Linux out of the box is much less likely to get hit with a debilitating attack than a default configuration of Windows out of the box.

This is true if for no other reason than there are more people targeting Windows boxes out there. Moreover, I would argue that a well-configured Linux box (but still just using standard measures and turning off unnecessary services) is much more secure than most any Windows box.

"services" has nothing to do with this particular one, it's a
client-side problem. Of which there are many, and precious little
attention paid to large classes of them.

And people get all defensive when I bitch about their script-driven
and flash-infested nightmare sites that I can't get anything useful

You hit the nail right on the head. Even if Linux were as porus as Windows, there is such a small base of end users (not servers) that it doesn't make much sense to target them. Linux and it's parent Unix have been around a lot longer than any Windows version, and Microsoft keeps rewriting the system to add more dancing bolgna. Microsoft has always put more emphasis on making things automatic and sexy than reliable and secure (As an aside, if anyone here wants to debate this with me, I've been developing Windows applications since Windows 1.03, and was a beta tester of Microsoft OS/2). Linux development has been evelotionary, with fully exposed source code, so low level problems tend to get found and fixed. Is it perfect? Hardly, but it's a better core system.

My recollection is that OS/2 ran Windows better than Windows ran Windows. Damn shame that OS/2 never made it to mass distribution.

Of course, then there was the Amiga. Very cool.

The Amiga was the first mass market multimedia computer that I can remember. I seem to recall that the Amiga 500 could do more than the Macintosh could, and faster than the Macintosh could do it, at 1/4 the price. It's a shame that Commodore's marketing was so utterly inept.

Yes, it was pretty good, although we used to call it half an operating system (OS/2 = OS divided by 2). Microsoft was working with IBM as a partner on the project, and in typical Microsoft fashion, they played ball until they had enough information to go off on their own with NT. I still have my extra-large OS/2 coffee mug and an OS/2 ditty bag.

I know how to run OS X on regular PC hardware.

OS/2 Warp was great. I'm still running it in VMWare for the nostalgic factor.

Are there people still out there using Internet Explorer? Wow. It elicited the same response in me that I get whenever I see someone still driving a Ford Pinto or a Chevy Vega.
