Ohh and FWIW it's worth, I checked my speedo vs. GPS with the new tires and there is a 2mph difference again. The 205/50/17 got rid of the speedo error.

And really FWIW, y'all think you know me. :p

    Justin,

Will your girlfriend enjoy your driving more when you have 17" rims/tires on your car? In other words, when you know you have the performance tires on it, do you find that you have less incentive to drive for fuel efficiency and more for "fun" which seems to be what she appreciates more?

Totally. Well, she doesn't appreciate "fun" driving. She just doesn't like slow poke hypermiling. So in this way I will not be reluctant to drive when she asks me to and I won't annoy her with my hypermiling. When alone I can still try and hypermile but it won't produce awesome numbers. It still makes a huge difference though. Mild freeway hypermiling was worth 47.7mpg with the 17" PureContacts and regular driving +10mph was worth 39mpg. Both were morning commute trips in the AM uphill.

39 mpg? Was that at 90 mph? I can't even get my car that low :(

It was my uphill morning commute at 70-75mph. 47mpg with the new 17s at 60mph. My 15s were between 54-58mpg going 60mph.

f8l, i've just got BRZ/FRS wheels. its got 215/45/17 michellin primacy HP tires. it looks like tread is only at 240 so im pretty sure it will be gone really fast. i've been looking at the forum... u are a tire guru.. so here is the million dollar question. which tire should i buy to get maximum MPG possible? i drive way too much that i dont really want to loose to much MPG. thanks in advance

Unfortunately you are always going to lose mpg with the 17s. It is just a simple fact of tire design. What you can do is perm a few calculations based on miles driven per year. This will tell you how much more money you will spend with the 17s vs. 15s. In most cases it is only an extra $10/mo or so to use 17s. So, instead of focusing on max mpg we could focus on initial purchase price and tire treadlife. Choose a tire that is not too expensive or one that has rebate offers and at least 55,000 mile tread wear warranty. Also read this article about gallons per 100miles. It makes the mpg hit much easier to swallow.

Mileage? No, it's Your Gallonage that Really Counts - Column - Car Reviews - Car and Driver

    Good choices in 215/45/17:
Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 - max mpg so so handling
Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max - max mpg so so handling and worse ride
Michelin Primacy MXM4 (V) - good mpg max comfort and wet performance
Continental ContiProContact (H) - good mpg and good performance
Continental ExtremeContact DWS - ok mpg great performance and good price

If you can wait until there is a good rebate or other deal on one of these tires then the mpg loss is mitigated quite a bit. Michelin and Bridgestone regularly run $70 rebate offers. Goodyear does an $80 rebate occasionally and some dealerships offer a deal where you buy 3 tires and get the 4th free. America's Tire Company matches most prices so they are a great option.
