Is this piece suggesting that Prius owners are eating more meat after acquiring the Prius? If not, then there is nothing to cancel out.
I am perhaps the poster child for not buying locally. From 1988 to 2002 I lived in Elko NV. The mover asked "what is that near?" 14 years later I still did not know. When I moved there it was 180 miles to a Sears and 290 miles to a Walmart. From my workplace, Boise ID is 290 miles away, Salt lake City is 290 miles away, Reno, NV is 290 miles away and Las Vegas is 420 miles away. Elko produces cattle and sheep but they are not slaughtered there. Major industries are Casinos, Gold Mines, and Brothels. (I worked at a Gold Mine, 50 miles north west of Elko) Any thing not available in Elko was a 4 hour drive. I got very good at ebay/amazon/newegg. (I have done about $75,000 on ebay) Here in Mississippi, corn, soybean, rice, and cotton are local crops, but what you eat locally is watermelon and catfish.
Now I wish I'd taken a picture of the "Next Services 102 Miles" sign on hiway 30 a bit out of Snowville UT, pointing towards Elko. It would have been a good response for those who don't start to look for a gas station until the last pip starts flashing. It wasn't the longest unserved leg of last month's road trip, but I don't recall seeing any signs with higher numbers.

if all Americans eliminated meat from their diets one night per week, the environmental effect would be equivalent to taking “30 to 40 million cars off the road for a year.” Would you just imagine
" ... I duno . . . maybe those high mile food lines are true for some. On the other hand, we were visiting friends near our Montana house just a week or 2 ago. As you can see (although Elk are not in season right now) - them's ain't no 1,100 miles off . . . and I DO like me some Elk roast now & them ... Like our friends, we have to put up a nice high fence to keep these suckers out - or they'll eat all the veggies and our apples. No way. It's them or us ... and since we've got the .30-06 we'll be keeping our veggies. We do buy much of our fruit & veggies from the local farmers market while we're back here in So Cal. .
