It looks like the Jetta Diesel wagon is returning to our shores in January of 08... it's back, and it's apparently much, much better. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=120684 Highlights: 50 State Clean 140hp Under 20K... And oh yeah... VW is expecting the EPA estimates for the 08 (Keep that year in mind) wagon to be 40/60. I think wow is about all the hypermilers can say to this..

Saw the Jetta wagon. It looked great (even though it's supposed to be a Golf Wagon). Hopefully it's quieter cause you gotta admit, the current TDIs (even the PD versions) are still noisy.

I read on a VW forum a post from a person who stood next to one running that the new VW diesels are unbelievably quiet. Since those MPG numbers reflect the new EPA rating system, I'm impressed. Toyota will need the rumored 08/09 Prius' higher mileage to compete.

we finally cleared the roads of those nasty Mercedes diesel wagons which were so trendy before SUVs and now this. Question: I am under the assumption that diesel is less refinery-intensive than gasoline, so why is diesel priced so high?

I've had the pleasure of driving both the C-Class and E-Class wagons in Germany and have routinely got 35mpg at 120 + mph. It is less refinery-intensive because it is a larger molecule and requires less carbon cracking. In my area, diesel is currently $2.53 / gallon compared to regular at $3.02 / gallon so I would say it's a deal at the moment. As someone that records and charts fuel prices, diesel changes seasonally. In my area, diesel is generally less than regular is the summer and more than premium in the winter.
