    That was it! Replacing the space with an underscore made the link behave properly.

    In general, try to simplify in-site post links down as short as
    possible. Take out the session IDs and extra trash, definitely
    don't have spaces or substitute %20, and you can always go re-edit
    a message and check for the URL tags. Generally, a reference to
    /index.html?showtopic=NNNNN&st=offset will be able to zero right in
    on a particular post, and still show the thread surrounding it.
    You can either just type it in and it will show up as a link as is,
    or hide it behind other word.
