Engine Knock is more an internal timing issue of when the spark fires vs the position of the pistons inside the ICE... cold can effect it but the fix would not have to do w/ engine mounts.

    IANAM, I am not a mechanic.

OK guys, its official, the TSB is out for the engine knock in the morning..., the problem is the intake manifold..., the issue is when, condensation builds up in the egr it gets sucked into the engine in the morning causing a misfire, the new manifold was revised in order to address this condition..., a brief knocking after cold startup.... TSB number:0010-12

Is this allot of work to execute the TSB?

I know I am not going to bring it in until the dealer has plenty of experience under their belt and I want to hear from peoples experiences first.

I do not think it is a lot of work to execute this TSB or the other one on the Engine Vibration.

I agree with you though I am going to wait a while and let them practice on other cars :) I only have 40k miles so have plenty of time.

I can get TIS access. IIRC you cannot get it from HI. I am getting ready to go out of town for a few days but when I get back I will be glad to get a temporary access and check it out for you.

I can't get access here? I don't know I have not tried yet. It's up to you if you want to check it is not that urgent, for you to pay just to check for me. I appreciate the offer though.

Just a question & a thought about the Knocking upon start up in the newer engines. How many miles is this this typically happening? Who is doing the oil changes? The owner or the dealer? Is the oil filter cartridge being changed at every oil change? How do you realy know if not doing filter yourself? Its hidden inside the cap/cover. Many dealers around here give 2 years & 25k mile oil changes for "Free" so we don't usualy see the cars until they are past the 25k or 2 year mark. I own a repair facility & we do change them everytime. I have noticed that usually the first oil/filter change I do, the filters are usually very dirty & even some sludge inside that I don't usually see in my repeat customers cars when changing.

The engine knocking is more common in the cold weather time frame. So my new 2011 bought in Aug. did not experience this until that following winter with low miles 6.5K miles before my first dealer oil change. I was able to reproduce it when cold by not allowing a full warm up the night before. Next day knocking.

By the way I decided not to use the dealer and change my oil every 5-7k miles, with filters every time.

I noticed on the one about warped engine undercover that Toyota uses several different size fasteners. Wouldn't color coded fasteners be much easier to return to the proper locations?

Sorry for the bounce but the cold weather is approaching and my request for the knocking TIS failed to get any action last Spring from the Toyota service center. So I have a couple of quick questions:
    • How to reproduce? :: Keep it 'cold' and do a partial warm-up; let it cool over night (40F?), and; next start?
    • Do we have a diagnosis? :: Ignition timing? Valve timing? Abnormal fuel collection intake manifold?
    • What does the TIS actually repair? :: I understand the intake manifold is replaced but what changed?
    Thanks,
    Bob Wilson
