My 2004 Prius (original owner) has 250,000 miles on the odometer and I'm just wandering due to the age and miles on the car, how one can tell in advance when the battery will need to be changed since it is very costly.

Secondly, my dealer informed me from a recent oil changed that my auxiliary has a low charge and it should be replaced. I last changed the 12v battery in 2009 (5 years ago) at 99,000 miles on the odometer by the dealer and was curious whether the replacement is as simple as replacing batteries in a non-hybrid vehicle, since I would like to replace it myself.

Anyone with such information would be deeply appreciated.

    Thank you.

Except for being rather cramped and hard to get to, the procedure for replacement is no different than any car.

Your Dealer or anyone with a Prius-aware OBD2 tool can read out the status of your HV battery modules. Look for variation in module pair voltages or module pair resistances as they indicate if the HV battery modules are getting unbalanced. One location in Florida where they can do this (other than a dealer) is:

    Mellor’s Automotive Inc.
