I received an email from Toyota this morning announcing the 11.1 DVD available for the new price of $169 MSRP. It said to check with your dealer for update info for the differences between 10.1 and 11.1.

I was at the dealer this morning for a brake fluid issue and asked for the update info. He emailed me first the Gen 4 version and then resent the correct Gen 6 version for me.

Find these attached. Does anyone have the update info for the differences between the 9.1 and 10.1? I do not see enough differences in my area to warrant purchase of the 11.1. But I have not seen the info on the 9.1 to 10.1 differences. The combo of the two may be more worth it.

I have never seen such a complete change listing for a navi update!

I always thought companies didn't publish this information because so little had changed.

That information is fantastic - tells me everything that I want to know...and the perfect reason not to spend $169.00!

After reviewing the update info I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and purchase the 11.1 upgrade, even though I think the price is still way too high even at $169. There were enough improvements in NC to make it worth my while. When I checked my existing DVD I found that I had the 8.1 version rather than the 9.1 version. I had a July 09 build which was before the 9.1 came out in October.

I loaded the new DVD tonight and am pleased so far with the improvements. It even had my daughter's address in a new subdivision in Winston-Salem.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I did not lose any of my saved preset destinations and previous addresses. I did have to go in and adjust the Voice Guidance volume, speeds on different roads, my map zone, etc. All in all a pretty painless upgrade.

I am going to take a couple of trips in the next two weekends to different ends of the state. That will tell the tale as to whether the upgrade was worth the price.

I tried to get in to the Service Menu but could not do so. I am pretty sure I did the correct move with the headlight switch. Someone else on here said that they were able to get to the Service Menu with the 11.1. I guess I need to go back and verify that I am doing it correctly.

That is the setting where you set your normal driving speeds for Residential, Main and Freeways. This is the setting the system uses when calculating estimated travel time.
IIRC, it is under Settings->Navi->Detailed Navi Settings.

LOL - you do not do this but the funny part is many on here that criticize the Nav for doing a lousy job of estimating arrival time have never taken the time to adjust these settings either. :)

I rather like some of the features of 8.1. Like driving 355 south of Bolingbrook, IL and the mapping thinks I'm driving on clouds of air until I hit New Lenox where it actually joins up with I-80. Makes me think I'm getting away with something I shouldn't.

Yes, we have a relatively new bypass around Greensboro where I-85 takes off of I-40 and then reconnects to I-40 on the other side of Greensboro where I am driving on clouds like that. I am going to miss the Nav Lady telling me to turn on every exit along the way trying to direct me back to I-40:)

No, you like the Nav lady, because you have the voice feature active. ;)
But seriously, the new nav DVD included an update in your area? 9 and 10 still didn't have 355 fixed, so these road updates can take many many years to incorporate. Funny why most cheap GPS units get things right in a matter of months. That's why I won't pop for a replacement DVD. I do research on Google Earth if I'm going a major trip - and why not - One can pick up tips from Wiki and see photos and video of places I'm traveling through. No DVD will include anything like that. The nav, for me, is mostly so I can find the roads to the hotel once I get near my destination, and so I know where north is. Even with the built-in nav unit's many faults, it has helped us out of several situations. Dang glad I have it.

I've had the car for over 2 years, and I probably dug through all this back then.

I like the nav, it gets me where I'm going when I don't know which way to go. I don't criticize it for not finding the shortest route when I already know my way. It doesn't know traffic patterns and temporary road construction.

I'm glad I have it, too.

I have actually gotten used to the Nav lady and kind of miss her when I turn it off :) Now the Voice Command lady is a different thing. I do not like it when she cannot decipher my southern accent:mad:

Yes, the Nav has its shortcomings but I have found that if you take the time to understand the different settings and then adjust them anytime you get a different result than you expected, it really does a pretty good job. It has never not taken me where I wanted to go. I am glad I have the integrated unit and not an external unit hanging out to invite theives.

Does the Nav update do anything other than update maps? Does it update any firmware or other features on the JBL head unit????

The only thing that I know of so far, other than the map udpate, is that it is supposed to have reduced the delay with Bluetooth when you first receive or send a call. I have not had a chance to try this yet.

Thanks for the information. Is there any way to order the Navigation CD online? The parts dept at my local Toyota dealer never answers the phone or returns my call. If you know a way to do such, please send me the url. Google is not helping me in this situation.

I am not aware of an online site. Both the Toyota Owner's and my local dealership's websites send me back to the dealer for parts.

I always go by my dealer so I can talk to the Parts person and make sure they have all of the correct info. Be careful when ordering the update that they get your car MY correct with the correct Nav generation number, etc.

Even with me talking to the parts guy and making sure he understood that I have a 2010 Nav which is a Gen 6, the first DVD he handed me was a Gen 5 for a Gen II Prius. I do not know if he ordered mine wrong or just grabbed the wrong DVD. He reached back in the drawer and handed me the correct DVD for my car.

    Error in Map change info:

    King County, Washington State:
"Added new overpass at I-5 and NE 10th St in Bellevue"

Unfortunately, I-5 does not come anywhere near Bellevue - it's about 6 miles away. The correct freeway is I-405. Hopefully it never tells you to exit to I-5.....

I took a trip to the western part of NC this weekend. All of the new I-40 and I-85 bypasses, that were not on the 8.1 version, were correct on the 11.1 version. Some of the subdivisions in Winston-Salem that were not on the 8.1 were also on the 11.1 as advertised. I did not find any omissions or errors on the way. The Nav Lady used all of the correct new routes and alternate routes.

I am making a trip to the Northeast part of NC this weekend and will check out this part of the state.

    So far so good.

I took a trip to the northeastern part of the state today and all of the latest updates in the area were shown on the new map updates. The Nav properly chose the correct routes using the new bypasses, roads, etc.

I went to a nephew's house in a fairly new residential development. Several other family members had tried to get the address on their Garmin's, TomTom's and car Nav systems and mine was the only one new enough to have the new development mapped correctly. :p

Of course the others said that they had not updated their systems in a year or so.
