Anyone know what that “Official MPG for US passenger cars†value is?

PHV uses a different approach. Rather than comparing to other vehicles, it compares to its own efficiency when not plugged in... which gives a clear representation of what the plug-supplied electricity accomplishes.

How many kWh of electricity were actually consumed?

Using the EPA figure, all the Volts should have consumed 11,854,363 kWh.

Pretty awesome using all that USA/domestic fuel.

If we do the math backward, it came out to 18.38 MPG.

    32,166,123 EV miles driven / 1,749,963 gallons saved = 18.38 MPG

If we use Volt's 37 MPG EPA figure, it should be 869,355 gallons saved. So Volt would use 11,854,363 kWh to substitute 869,355 gallons.

If we hold Volt to Prius PHV 50 MPG standard, Volt would save 643,323 gallons.

Using domestic fuel (mostly coal) can be good or bad depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Remember, about a third of gasoline is also domestic.

Not user if that math is backwards, but its definitely wrong.

The computation is in a footnote.. its not just EV miles.. since the volt gas is also above average you need to consider all miles vs all gas..

Comparison to the US average is,however, meaningless. Comparison should be to what car they had or what they considered. Consider to a Prius is like considered to moped.. both get better mileage than the average car but neither is what I am willing to drive. I compare mine to a BMW 3 series.

Notice how GM claims to be transparent but detail is always missing and we have to dig for it?

Of course, the data itself actually makes for a compelling argument in favor of Cruze.

It's really unfortunate games like this continue to be played, especially with sales still way under a profitable level and the stock value so far below IPO price.

Why not compare it to Volt's hybrid mode MPG?

The catch with that is, a plugin hybrid with crappy gas engine would look better because it'll show more gallons "saved" vs. plugin with a 50 MPG gas engine.

What was your previous car before Volt?

GM is using the same trick toyota uses with the prius. They don't say how much gas the prius saves compared to a prius, they compare it to a different car. In England Toyota was even sued and lost for false advertising, picking a much worse than comparable car. Perhaps the Prius should be compared to a matrix and the volt to a cruze:D

Hey that is your crappy method, and as you see its not legitamate. How about my method of similar non-hybrid:D

Many of those miles were saved just because the volt is also a hybrid a plug in hybrid. One number was disapointing though, only 59% of those miles were electric. I was hoping self selection would push this into the 60s.

Check out the mfd on the prius c, or toyota advertising claims. These talk about hybrid gas savings versus not a prius but a normal car, and as I pointed out toyota was sued and lost for picking a normal car that was much worse than normal in England.

That site is not saying gas savings by using electricity, it is talking about gas savings using the volt versus a "normal car". But I think they should be comparing it to a cruze:D

any link to the above lawsuit claim? curious...is it similar to the Civic Hybrid owner that won the low MPG lawsuit/small claim?

    No quite different.
Toyota gets hand slapped for false hybrid advertising in UK

Watch the commercial, its quite over the top. The prius will give you bluer skies. The truth about prius gas mileage and ghg release, and volt gas and electricity consumption is good.

Yea, it is disappointing. The EV mile percentage is much lower than the partial data (70%) from Voltstats.net. Looking at the total miles driven, Voltstats has about 10% of the total miles.

That means 41% of Volt miles were driven with premium gas at 37 MPG. That ought to drag the overall composite MPGe down.

Using EPA combined mileage it would be 58 MPGe versus 64 if it was 70%. MPGe didn't drop all that much but they may have used 37% more oil:mad: I do not know if the numbers are significantly different than EPA though.

Volt's EPA composite figure is 60 MPGe so 58 MPGe is pretty close.

Most of the vocal Volt owners do get much higher MPGe but the average of all Volt is really disappointing. That means there must be a chunk of owners that never plug the Volt in? Perhaps, they have a very long commute?

Prius PHV owner's spreadsheet shows the average of 67 MPGe. It is not a full year data so it is not comparable but it'll be interesting!

Yep.. and as AustinGreen just cited, Toyota just misrepresent data in its ads.. Guess what they are in business and some suits somewhere feel they can drive marketing/messaging don't always care.

There is no way to use the posted data to make a meaningful statement about the MPGe.. EPA uses highway and city in a mix and that mix may not be at all what volt drivers did. Without breakdowns one cannot tell.
Also cannot tell what milage people actually obtained.
