new owner need help please

    Always thought Prius lives up to it reputation the most reliable car with good mileage but guess I was wrong. Just bought a 2005 package 6 Prius, 178k averaging around 49-51mpg loves it for the first month until hell rain upon me. All of the sudden the dashboard lights went on like a Christmas trees, I notice the battery didnt charge and the engine runs but really weak. So I brought the car to an outside shop that special on battery, they found out cells 12 and 14 are bad 4 cells need to replace so they quote me for $1100 to rebuild the battery with 1 year warranty. I got the car fixed but i notice the car didn't feel like b4. The engine is a little weaker, the car rev higher than normal as a results the gas engine work harder. My mpg went from 51-41, the battery never charge full only stop around 80% brought the car back they checked everything seems Normal. 2 days later the dashboard lid up like Christmas tree again,so I went back this time the parking system went nuts. He explained the shaft suppose to lock the gear when I park so the car doesn't roll away, that thing failed. Or sometimes the computer throw up wrong error code. He turned it off and a day later the lights went back on again, I notice this time the battery fan keeps on blowing and the gas engine never shut off when Im at the light. Any suggestions please help, thank u a lot

    first mistake you made is you brought your car to someone that didn't rebuild the battery properly for $1100. That's probably causing all your problems.

    2nd mistake is buying a car with 178k miles and think it'll be the most reliable thing. The car is only designed to go about 180k miles, so it's already at the end of the designed service life. Now you can expect anything to fail at any time. Although you read many Prius go 300k miles, that doesn't necessarily mean it goes that many miles without problems or repairs.

    welcome! thinking that any vehicle is going to be 'reliable' after 10 years and 178,000 miles, is definitely 'wrong'. for people who cannot afford much more, a small hyundai/kia or such with lower miles and years would be a better choice.

    if you can diy, you will have to buy a scanner and identify the bad cells, remove the battery, relace and balance. if not, you will need another battery, or dump the car and start over. all the best!(y)

    Buying a car with 176,000 miles is a lot different than buying a new car.
    If possible, people may want to get a pre-purchase inspection and have the battery checked prior to purchasing.
    There is a chance the previous owner knew about the failing battery when they sold it to you. A check of the Toyota owner's site might clue you in.

    Rebuilding a battery when done quickly, will likely fail again soon. What we like to call playing "Whack-a-Mole".
    Replace one or two, and then soon, a few more begin to fail..

    It's very unfortunate, but you did buy a 10 year old vehicle with 178K miles on it. Reliability on any used vehicle with those credentials becomes suspect. With a hybrid probably running on it's original HV battery maybe more suspect.

    I think you have to ask yourself how much more you wish to invest or possibly invest? Because nearly any machine can be repaired and restored but at some point the investment doesn't make sense. I can't answer that for you.
    Also unfortunate is it sounds like you already put $1100 into a battery rebuild that may of not been the best choice. You have 1 year warranty so I suppose you just try to get at least 1 year of decent performance out of it.

    All that being said, Prius's reliability reputation IMO is well earned and deserved.
    Any 10 year old used vehicle, can become a nightmare of needed repair.

    thanks for the comments guys. It's more complicated than it is. I bought the car with only 89k on the odometer, I used carfax and inspected the car b4 I buys it. The battery still under warranty until October this year. I called dealerships when this happen they told me to bring the car in and they'll replace the battery with no charge. When I was there, they found out this car last service in December 2013 at 151k so the warranty was voided. They did some research and found out the first owner rolled back the odometer b4 he or she sold the car to the second owner. The second owner new about this bc one of his service was rejected in 2014. The pink slip says actual mileage when he purchase the car which means they didn't document the incorrect mileage with DMV. I'm filing an investigation case with DMV along with all the documents and photos I have.

    if you got a carfax, it should show the dealership service at 151k in 2013

    So for now, you need to go back to the outside shop that worked on your battery.
    It is still within their 1 year warranty, correct?

    1) Ask them to tell you what error codes are present. (For example P0A80, or any codes P3011-P3024)
    2) Also them to tell you the "Delta SOC" value.

    What is the name of the outside shop that did the battery work?

    The shop called Electron Automotive down in city of Orange, CA. The code I got are P0A80, P3022, and P3024. P0A80 is for the failing battery, P3022 and P3024 are from cells 12 and 14. He drove me around with the ODB scanner, Delta SOC or changing of Current is 0. The lower the #, the better. Max Amp my battery put out is 180 and lowest is 80. He said if it goes below 50A, I having a problem with the battery. The battery seems healthy, he said the battery not suppose to charge full. The second time I brought the car to the shop, he scanned and again and this time it showed parking system error. I notice my ICE does not turn off and the battery fan is constantly running. My MPG when from 51 to 41. Any suggestion?

    If you have all the lights lit up, including the battery light, I would think that there is a battery code present.

    I also would think it's unlikely that a battery with that many miles would have a Delta SOC of 0.

    Something does not add up.

    my 2006 shows a battery soc at 0, does that mean it's in good shape?

    IMHO, you should have went to the dealership first. They have the equipment to fix it right the first time, not fix it right next time.

    So like the HV battery died but after replacing it, why isnt the battery charging

    LG-D851 ?

    The car is running fine, the battery is charging normal. I just don't know why the ICE won't shut off and the battery fan is constantly running. Could it be the 12V battery?

    rolling back the odometer is a felony, IIRC. you definitely need to persue the odometer fraud before doing anything else. you might be able to get your money back for the car. you should not have to be stuck with that car when someone tampered with the odometer.

    If the fan is on all the time, then the battery temp sensor is saying the battery is too warm.

    If the engine runs continuously, then the battery could be overcharging.( The Hybrid System will run the engine trying to use or "burn off" excess charge).
