IMG_6645.JPG I bought a 2012 Prius Three last week !!! So far enjoyed a lot. Went to a 1000+ Miles Trip on the long weekend..Got 54.2(Calculated) MPG..But during the regular commute to office I am only getting 45 MPG(Display). What I am doing wrong in city driving?

Also I tried to engage the Hill Start Assist feature by pushing the brake pedal but no luck :( It this feature only available on some prius models?

The Gen3 cars seem to be better on the highway vs local driving if you are trying to get max mpg

City mileage really depends how hard you accelerate, allowing the car glide to red light, and only staying in ev mode. For example last night on 6 mile commute with a pretty flat terrain I average 72 mpg. Typically when I accelerate I go into power mode and once I hit about 40 mph I let my foot off the pedal and allow the car go back into ev mode.

I use to drive like this when I first got my Prius, but after a while I just said screw it and drove it hard.

Thanks Law..I guess that's the problem..My car hardly goes back to EV mode..Most of the time either ECO or red line in PWR.

You also want to be effective when braking too because once your battery is depleted the engine will recharge it eating up your mpg. Try not to brake suddenly, you brake early but not so hard that your charge bar is full so your efficient. In other words you want the charge bar to be full as possible as long as possible.

Hill Start Assist is available on all 3rd Gen Prius models. You have to press all the way down. You'll feel a denté, almost like a switch. You've engaged it when you hear a single beep and a flashing "Slip Indicator" light (I know, it's not the most intuitive light to use, seeing it's the same blinking light for traction control and vehicle stability control)

Thanks Tideland...Just one more question..Do we need to have on an incline for Hill Start Assist to get engaged? Or I can test it on flat road?

You can engage/disengage it at any time. You do not have to be on an incline.

Just push all the way down, you'll feel a click in the pedal.

To deactivate it, either press all the way down again (so it cancels it, in case you didn't want to activate it in the first place. You'll hear two beeps), or just remove your foot from the brake pedal and the car will hold the brakes for 1.2 secs (something like that, it's mentioned on the manual) before it releases the brakes (which I assume is what you want to test).

Thanks Tideland. I appreciate the help. I got the 2012 used car and for some reason previous owner didn't gave the manual document to dealer. I have ordered one from ebay.
