Thanks for the pictures Rick and I'm glad to see this caption:
Proves I'm not the only one who thinks so :)

IF I were to choke down the (my perceived) ergonomic backslides and buy some future Prius with that arch/cup holder/armrest fiasco AND couldn't figure out how to chop the whole thing off and move the shifter back where it belongs (which I'm sure would be impossible), I think I'd move those seat heater switches into the 'triangle' above and to the right of the cup holder. PLENTY of wasted volume inside that arch.

Oh, and I'm sure the kids would approve of the new battery cooling vent position. They are not at all happy I won't let them sleep with a pillow on the right B Pillar since it would block the vent in the Gen II position at the top of the seat.
  6. efusco
My kids will like it too...easier to drop small stones and pennies in in that position!

Galaxee's DH can bench press the new Prius:

Mine will as well, but w/ an infant car seat in the middle, they won't have any cup holders to use anymore.

Okay, all my photos, and three short videos, are uploaded to Flickr. Please leave a comment, especially with corrections to names, screen names, locations, whatever.
    I'm still a bit tired! :p

Exactly. I spoke with the product development guy about that. So did mrv. I also pointed out what I saw as a serious flaw in how they addressed the battery vent.
    He took notes.

I see the speedometer near the center of the dash again. What is up with this?
  12. Mike Dimmick
It's been near the centre of the dash on both of the previous models!

I actually only noticed this this morning when driving to work - the speedometer is not above the centre line of the steering wheel on NHW20 (Prius II, hatchback, 2004-2009). I suppose the point is that while you're sitting towards the right-hand-side (left, for North America and continental EU) of the car, you're looking towards the centre of the lane or to street furniture on the roadside, so your line-of-sight is not directly in front of you.

If it was a McLaren F1 with one driver's seat in front, then it probably would make sense to have the speedometer directly in front of you.

Our right-hand-drive models have pretty much a mirror image of the LHD controls - more exactly, since Japan is right-hand drive, the LHD cars get mirrored controls. The shifter is controlled with the left hand and you move it to the right and down to select Drive, for example.

You can tell NHW20 originated as an RHD design because the positioning of the Power button and keyfob slot are much tidier. The power button is on the right-most vent panel, and the keyfob slot just to the left of that. (UK cars don't get 'smart key' so we have to slot the fob into the dash to turn the car on.)

I don't understand what you mean by "looking towards the centre of the lane or to street furniture on the roadside." Explain what you mean by that. When I am driving, regardless of righthand or lefthand drive, my eyes are looking directly above the steering wheel.

OH WAIT! I think I figured it out! The ONLY time anyone ever looks at their speedometer is when a police officer is sitting on the side of the road. So, if you see an officer on the side of the road, you can immediately look at your speedometer. :D

The current, Iconic Prius has the speedometer a little towards the center of the car. My perception, when I sat behind the wheel of the Gen 3 Prius, is that it is actually moved a little bit more towards the steering wheel, and thus a bit more directly in line with the road whilst driving.

wouldn't you think that they'd give you special guests a chance to drive it ... ? ...
  16. patsparks
well they put the gas gauge right in front of the driver and people still manage to run out of gas so I think the speedo position is fine.

    Anyone have any photos?

    Excellent point!

The head Toyota person in charge of all events has only been able to drive one around a track three times. Access has been pretty limited.
