Here is a helpful mechanism for those do-it-your-selfer's out there. Check out the pdf. instructions below & how to ... and the steps I used for changing my oil and filter - pictures and more! Becareful with the engine air deflector as the holding expanding plastic clips can be damaged (if you damage - most car parts stores are a replacement clip ... I always keep several in hand just in case).

    Enjoy! Bill

    :juggle:

How do you reset the oil change indicator scale ?

First - you need to hit the trip indicator button until you have "trip A" indicated in the display (I use this at re-fueling times)

Next - you will need to push the park button then the power off button - yes you will need to fully turn off the car.

Next - locate the MPH/Kilometers button on the dashboard. Press and hold down and then restart the car by pushing the power on button (hold both buttons down at the same time - when the scale is re-set, let go of both buttons)

Verify by looking at the scale indicator :mod:

I believe this is correct - good luck.

    Mr. Bill

PS - got my notification on 3/6/2010 synthetic oil approved for up to 10,000 miles - don't forget to use the best filter you can buy - and you will need to reset the indicator at the 5,000 mile interval....

Just curious--how many miles were on it when you changed the oil/filter? The filter looks like it caught a fair amount of black stuff.

I always have an oil/filter service done on my cars at ~2,000 miles to get rid of the break-in gunk. Your old oil filter confirms why it's important.

What size oil filter wrench did you use? There are quite a few end-cap wrenches (sockets, actually). I have a small collection from working on past & present vehicles.

I bought the proper size 64mm from these guys.........

Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY640 - Toyota 64mm Oil Filter Wrench

I think a 65mm that you can find in most auto stores, as well as your local Toyota dealer, would work, but this is the right tool....
The oil change is a straight-forward deal, easy even, & this 'How to' is a good guide........;)

Even tho the oil looked real good, I concur with your thinking and did mine @998miles. Replaced w/ M1 0w/20....
    The filter looked OK....
I sent a sample to BlackstoneLabs to check out the OE oil...we'll see.

Does anyone know how to reset the Oil Maintenance Screen?? I change my oil last week before the 5000 mile mark. I just hit 5000 miles today and the Oil Screen came on.

So whats the official word on this...Is it a 64mm or 65mm? I'm guessing that your saying 65mm would work but probably strip out if the housing is on too tight?

Somewhere before step 9 (secure access door) you might want to add (it should be obvious, but for the sake of completeness) "replace oil pan drain plug". :)

Also - step 10 talks about checking tightness of the oil filter housing and drain plug - can that be done after the access door is put back, or should the order of those two steps be reversed?

Overall an excellent guide! Now I just have to wait to get my GenIII to try it out on...

The cap is a 64mm...not readily available. This nugget of info was gleaned from reading the 2 or 3 concurrently running 'Oil change' or 'Oil change interval' threads here.
I never tried a 65mm, so I don't know if it would slip or not....
But in those same threads there are posts from people who have....
and it looks like Mr Bill might have used one also....

Can you tell me if the cap you bought is metal or plastic? I looked at the link, and it looks like metal, but I'm not sure. I've had bad luck with plastic oil filter wrenches in the past, as they usually start slipping for me. I prefer the metal.

    Thanks for the info.

The 64mm socket is availible from Toyota for ~$25 and its made of thick aluminum which should last forever.

    It's sturdy aluminum...will last a lifetime.
The 2 Toyota dealers I visited looking for it had no idea of it's existance....surprising huh? :heh:
Couldn't find one at Advance or AutoZone either....altho all 3 places had an inexpensive 65mm wrench that probably would work....
You'll need a 24mm socket for the stud on the wrench, and you're good to go............

Usually the plug washers are good for a long time, if not over torqued. I plan on picking up an extra at the dealership though.
