On my G2, I use a Fumoto drain plug. May I assume this would be fine with the G3?

Probably, there has been a concern about a clearance issue, but the plastic bottom is so flexible even if it touched it may not be a problem. I'd check for clearance first.

The drain plug bolt head almost touches the access cover now. I had been considering getting one, but after doing an oil change I really don't think there's clearance for one.

Best drain plug I have found, and have used for my last 5 cars is the Fram EZ Drain, model SD3 fits the Prius. I believe these are discontinued but can be found on ebay. You replace the plug with it and only have to unscrew the cap, and attach the hose which releases the oil. Cannot leak if the hose is not attached as it is held closed by oil pressure. I put a 5 gallon jug under car and attach the hose and it drains directly into the jug, no mess, no leaks!
