This afternoon, I came out of Trader Joe's to find this car "parked" next to my Prius. It took me about 15 minutes to try and figure out what to do and, with the help of a friendly stranger, maneuver out of that spot without damaging my car.

With a park job like that I would have called the cops as well as a tow truck to have that car towed at the owners expense.

Likely some jack%$# that wanted to play games and try to block you in because they thought it was funny. Either that or someone left their keys where their 8yr old could reach them.....

I'd have left him a few heavy foot prints in rear door and quarter panel.

Yeah, I did want to call the cops but I didn't know what number to call without calling 911.

I don't think it was anybody that had brains enough to even think that far. I suspect it was someone drunk or high who just saw the space and pulled in, without bothering to straighten up. I'm just glad he/she didn't bang my car.

With a few burly friends you could have just tilted it into the landscaping.

I was going to say the same thing: just roll it over until it's out of the way.

A friend of mine was hit in a parking lot and when he called the police he was told that the police don't have jurisdiction because the parking lot is considered private property. Can anyone confirm this?

Anyway, some form of personal vindication would be nice. Perhaps you can take that picture, put it on a funny poster saying like, "I spent all day painting those lines; please take ten seconds to use them." Then take it into Trader Joe's for posting.

TJ's generally has an in-store PA that they're always calling
fellow employees on. You could have asked to use that to either
have them ask who the numbnuts in the blue Accord was, or do it
yourself with a few choice linguistic embellishments to maximize
public humiliation within the confines of the store.

My recent bumper car episode was in a private parking lot. The police dispatcher said that an officer would come out if there was anything to investigate, but since no car parts were left behind, there was no reason to come out. They had me file a report and that was it.

Police do get involved on private property if a complaint is made, a law is broken, or safety is an issue.

I like your ideas and I had considered reporting it to TJ's, but I can't say for sure he/she was a TJ's customer -- it's actually a shopping center with a number of stores so there's no way to know.

Anyway, considering the way he parked, I'm pretty glad he didn't try to straighten up because he would have scraped me for sure. There were only about 3 inches between his car and mine. I couldn't maneuver further away from him to the right because of the angle, but I managed to get myself completely parallel, looked out my window, and with a guy behind me telling me when cars were coming, very gingerly backed out.

And I thought I had a problem parking straight !

In retrospect, I should have deflated a tire or two so he'd be stuck there for a while.

True. Flattening tires is a fun and relatively harmless retaliation.

Unless of course you slice off the valve stem. That's a little harder to fix.

you know what?? you should totally post this on failblog. It's just as contagious as Youtube and everyone will know who he is and it will never ever die (esp. since the licence plate is showing). Heck, maybe the DMV might see it and refuse to re-issue the plate.

"Parking fail"..... it worked for the lady who drove her BMW over two cars at a Fitness centre in Thorton, ON. The lady got charged (court date pending) and one of the victims got a new car!
