I saw this on Craigslist. Some enterprising guy (or gal) has posted his/her PiP spot for sale on Craigslist at an incredible price:

    NEW Blue Plug-in Prius (PHV)

    Flame away ...

    ---
NEW Blue Plug-in Prius (PHV) - $115000 (concord / pleasant hill / martinez)

I have one of the first Plug-In Prius' to land in the Bay Area, if not the entire West Coast. It's blue in color and cool. If you didn't pre-order one, you'll be waiting a LONG time. Be the first to own one - be awesome, you know you are.

Toyota has revised the MPGe rating for this car and its estimated to get ~95 MPGe, meaning you might actually get far more. Will be nice w/that $5 gas coming along before too long.

This car is eligible for a $1,500 CA rebate and a $2,500 Fed tax credit. It will also be eligible for the new CA HOV/Carpool lane stickers (available soon).

The car is waiting for me to pick it up and if you're interested, I will transfer the purchasing rights to you or simply buy it and then transfer the car to you (more value retained if you simply purchase the rights to buy).

    Pricing:

You buy direct (purchasing rights ONLY) - $75k obo
I buy and you pay me - $115k obo

Either transaction will be CASH or CASHIERS CHECK ONLY. Obviously this post isn't for the typical buyer.

    FAQs:

Is this post serious? - YES
Is the pricing listed here correct? - YES (think of it like the toys people sell for 10-100x the MSRP - I'm only asking ~3x more than the MSRP)
Why? - Because the dealer (and I) was offered cash to purchase the car before others can get one. In one case, someone offered double the MSRP. This car is going to be a hot item, especially with gas prices approaching $5 a gallon.
How do I get on this? - Email me.

    Is OP the seller ?
If someone actually offered 2x msrp, the owner was a fool not to accept.

PT Barnum is having a good laugh right about now.

There will be orphan cars for MUCH MUCH less. There are always a few people who order and then back out because they get cold feet, or cannot come up with the money, or whatever. Some dealers (the reputable ones) will find another buyer at MSRP. Disreputable dealers sold the early 2004 Prius for $5,000 over MSRP in a few cases. I'd guess someone who wanted a PiP that badly could find an orphan for $5,000 over MSRP, and with diligent searching might even find one at MSRP.

My local Nissan dealer had several orphan Leafs and sold them at MSRP to his own list of people who missed the initial ordering process. And I'll bet Dianne winds up with an orphan PiP or two and does the same.

Of course, Craig's List has a reputation. This ad may be a pure scam. Take your money and run.

Note that to get the federal tax credit you must be the original buyer of the car new, and you must keep it long enough to dispel any suspicion by the IRS that you bought it in order to sell. But I suppose that at the prices asked in the ad, the tax credit is insignificant.
