Thank you for the article, it is an interesting development. However, the motors that they are referring to are the cheap ones that are in table fans, vacuum cleaners, etc, and not "high-performance motors, such as servo motors." I'm sure someone here has the exact efficiencies of MG1 and MG2, but I'm sure that they exceed 90% already. When the article states that they are suitable for use in cars, I believe they mean for windshield wipers, power windows, and heater blowers.

They do suggest that it would be appropriate for hybrid vehicles. While I doubt they could wring more efficiency out of the electric motors (AC motors are highly optimized for efficiency over decades of industrial use), perhaps this approach could bring down the weight, rotational inertia, and cost. Even it was just a few percentage points less efficient, that would still be quite a boon to hybrid (or electric) vehicles. Not every vehicle will be, or needs to be, a no-compromises mileage marathoner like the Prius!

Edit: Ah, here's the actual study's conclusion: "Conclusions that have been drawn are that a shift in the future to SiC in hybrid vehicles would reduce cooling equipment, size of passive components, losses and space" but a prototype needs to be developed to really know for sure.
